Dynamic optimization is the process of determining control and state histories for a dynamic system over a finite time period to minimize a performance index. There may be constraints on the final states of the system and on the 'in-flight' states and controls. An important special case is when the dynamic system is linear and the performance index is a quadratic functional of the states and controls. The main tools of dynamic optimization are the calculus of variations and dynamic programming. Dynamic optimization is used to determine efficient maneuvers of aircraft, spacecraft, and robots, and in the design of structures where the independent variable is distance along the structure instead of time.

Computational algorithms are developed for solving practical problems and many examples and problems are presented. The algorithms are coded in MATLAB which is a popular software package for engineers interested in dynamics and control. Solutions for the examples and the many problems are provided on a disc that goes with the book. The problems are difficult but doing them is the only way to really learn the subject.

The book starts with a review of parameter optimization (ordinary calculus) and then treats dynamic optimization (the calculus of variations), first with fixed final time and no constraints, then with terminal constraints, and then with terminal constraints and open final time. This is followed by chapters on linear-quadratic problems which are of practical interest in themselves but also develop the theory needed to consider the second variation and neighboring-optimal feedback control. Next is a chapter on dynamic programming, an interesting but not very practical method of nonlinear feedback control, and then a chapter on neighboring-optimal feedback control which is practical. The next to last chapter deals with inequality constraints, first for static systems (nonlinear programming) and then for dynamic systems using inverse dynamic optimization. The last chapter covers singular problems, i. e. problems where the second variation is identically zero for a finite time; these problems occur when the system equations are linear in one or more of the controls. There is an appendix giving a short history of dynamic optimization.

Chapter 5 describes dynamic optimization for linear systems with time-varying feedback gains. With fast computers having large memory storage, this is now an attractive alternative to constant-gain feedback control, since it cuts the time to reach a desired state almost in half. In Chapters 9 and 10 we describe an inverse dynamic optimization method due to Seywald (1994) that uses nonlinear programming software to solve dynamic optimization problems with inequality constraints or singular arcs.

Before the advent of the digital computer (about 1950) only rather simple dynamic optimization problems could be solved (in terms of tabulated functions). Now, with powerful digital computers, numerical solutions can be found for realistic problems. Some current aircraft contain flight management computers that find optimal flight paths in real time and send them to the autopilot for implementation. Digital control is now commonplace, where a digital computer is the logic element in a feedback control system involving sensors and actuators. Spaceflight would not have been possible without digital control. Microprocessors have made it possible to use digital control in cars, home appliances, robots, and even toys.

This book updates and extends the first half of Applied Optimal Control 1. An update and extension of the second half is under preparation with the tentative title "Optimal Control with Uncertainty"; it will deal with optimal linear feedback control in the presence of uncertain inputs and an uncertain dynamic model. In the intervening 29 years the development and spread of personal computers has made it possible to do more interesting problems while learning the subject. Hence this book contains more examples and problems than its predecessor.

The codes presented here were prepared for use on personal computers. Several aerospace companies have developed codes for very large problems which require supercomputers. For example Boeing (Ref. HP) has developed OTIS (Optimal Trajectories by Implicit Simulation) and Lockheed-Martin (Ref. BCS) has developed POST (Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories) which use collocation techniques with NLP software. Collocation techniques are very effective but are not discussed in this text in an effort to limit the size of the book.

The discrete algorithms presented in Chapters 2 to 4 are largely there for pedagogical reasons since they are simpler and lead into the continuous algorithms. However they also lead into the discrete algorithms for the linear-quadratic problems of Chapters 5 and 6 which are used more than the continuous algorithms in current practice.

I should like to thank Carolyn Edwards for her patient work in putting the text on the computer. Using LATEX I made changes and additions on my personal computer. About the Author

Arthur E. Bryson is Pigott Professor of Engineering Emeritus at Stanford University, where he served on the faculty from 1968 to 1994. He has also taught at Harvard and MIT and worked as a research engineer and consultant at Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon. Professor Bryson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. His awards include the IEEE Control Systems Award, the ASME Oldenberger Award, and the AACC Bellman Award. He is an Honorary Fellow of AIAA and an Honorary Member of IEEE. He is the author of 100 papers and three books.

Oh, the Places You'll Go.

Cate McGowan’s characters sleep with me.

Blue, with his frenetic need to paint, longs for what could be a mermaid with narcolepsy.

Tara and David, floating between childhood and adulthood, entertwine languidly on the cusp of…something.

Violet Gray Witherspoon, a name of nouns, spills yearning verbs onto secret pages.

Jebediah dances with sacrifice, then freedom. Superheroes emerge in unlikely places. Rats expose themselves in the prison yard. A crop of immigrant birds wend their unlikely way in country.

Cate McGowan’s characters inhabit my dreams. They have taken up residence in my REM sleep, but, unlike some vague dreams you cannot recall in the morning, they are indelible.

McGowan’s prose is florid and full, yet keenly concise. It pulls you into the picture, and from inside, you can taste the paint upon the canvas.

As I drive past rows of vegetables in fields during my travels, I shall never look at farm equipment the same way again.

Enjoy this book in one sitting, as I did, or let it stretch out limpidly over a few days or weeks. But most definitely devour it. You won’t be sorry.

This collection of stories lives up to its title, in that they take us deftly to true places we have never been, places that we get to know through cunning observation and beautiful prose. With Cate McGowan as our gracious and expert guide, showing us just what to look for, we come away enlightened and delighted for having made the journey through time to these places that feel both happily, and sometimes painfully, familiar. This book is armchair travel at its very very best.

High talented but ultraromantic Barbey d'Aurevilly (Une vieille maitresse)

I read this novel with pleasure and with reticence at the same time. Generally, I am as fond of the style as of the action, the story; and Barbey d'Aurevilly style is remarkably brilliant with so many poetic metaphores. He was born in Normandy and is a master when describing the Norman coast with its high chalking cliffs dazzling in the sun and severe under the grey sky. He shows us also the dandy life (that he lived himself) of the young Parisians who spill lazily their money with women and parties.
As to the action, the main part of the novel presents the disastrous effects of an unbridled passion. And here, I have to stop in order to think about it: this passion is outrageous and the author becomes extravagant. Of course, we cannot forget that we are in the middle of the XIX century when the romanticism moves toward the fantastic or changes into supernaturalism. Maybe we could call it ultra romanticism.
I was progressing in my reading without real enthusiasm , nevertheless with great interest, when I remembered suddenly other two novels published four years before. So I think that the author read them before writing his book: Prosper M�rim�e's "Carmen", in France and Emily Bront�'s "Wuthering Heights", in England, both published in 1847. "Une vieille maitresse" was published in 1851.
To fully appreciate this novel, it's important to place it in its context, its time and literary moment. Written nowadays, I doubt it would have any success.

Tediously muddled ISO coherent editing

I looked forward to reading this acclaimed text in Medical Anthropology. But, once it arrived, I found it tedious. (That is: boring, dull, monotonous, repetitive, unrelieved, unvaried, uneventful; characterless, colorless, lifeless, insipid, uninteresting, unexciting, uninspiring, uninvolving, flat, bland, dry, stale, tired, lackluster, stodgy, dreary, mundane, monochrome; mind-numbing, soul-destroying, wearisome, tiring, tiresome, irksome, trying, frustrating; informal, deadly, not up to much, humdrum, ho-hum, blah, dullsville--man, that's a lot. So much that I had to borrow that list of synonyms from the Web :) But it's totally true. This appears to be s one of those media-is-the-message works, where presentation trumps content, and form is not intended to advance the understanding so much as present a cultural bric-a-brac to startle the senses. It started off with uninspired kowtows to anthropology of the body and Foucault, postures which always strikes me as oh-so-PC. So I bowed to these various Meccas And from there forward I struggled with every page, until, reaching page 147, I finally found myself unable to finish the book. And I put the text back on my shelf. At 300 pages of densely-spaced text in 6-point font, it is absolutely maddening to try to read. I'd find myself reading page after page and having absolutely no idea of the point he was making, or trying to make. Or maybe my assumption that he was actually trying to make a point was false, a bit of impostion on the text by the reader. Maybe the act of putting-into-words his semi-random stream of consciousness itself was the point. It would have benefited greatly by a slash-and-burn editing before seeing the light of publication, IMHO boil it down to 200 pages max with a coherent structure and argument. It was, in any event, a bit like reading Joyce bleary-eyed on a bad hair day. But that stream-of-consciousness POV seems to have been recognized & rewarded by the right tribes. I understand this book won the Victor Turner prize in ethnographic writing. Now I understand that that is some prestigious award. But to me, this speaks volumes as to what Medical Anthropology is, and is not; and it leaves to we other anthropologists of medicine what MA might actually be. 2 1/2 stars.

Approachable, yet profound

As a medical student beginning research on Alzheimer's disease, this book provided me a deeper understanding of the full ramifications of such a disease on the lives of the patient and family members. The interactions described in this book are really quite complicated, yet the clear writing and organization makes this subject matter approachable.

professor cohen may be the most brilliant anthropologist of our time as it pertains to south asia. this book is a sparkling example of a prodigious mind at work. it is both scholarly and playful; rigorous and light-hearted. may be read for both pleasure and for what it can teach us about all manner of things. may be the beat scholarly work i have ever read. first-rate.

About the Author
Josiah Kahane is a professor emeritus of design at the Holon Institute of Technology (HIT) in Israel. Kahane studied industrial design in UCLA, receiving a BA in 1970 and an MA in 1972. As one of the pioneers of industrial design in Israel, he was involved in founding the design program at HIT, serving several terms as departmental chair. Later involved in academic management, as HIT's academic VP. Kahane was also a design consultant in Israel’s electronics and medical hi-tech hub. ent communities.

An exploration into the forces that shape forms in mass manufactured products. It is particularly interesting because the author is designer/style agnostic, and more interested with the contexts that inform designs. I would recommend this to every designer interested in expanding their knowledge and vocabulary on the subject of discussing form in industrial design.
