FABULOUS book

This book is just as good today as it was when was first published. I wish to God I'd known about it in the 60's! It's so positive and funny and refreshing. Nobody else was writing books like this at the time. I've gone on to read several other man from CAMP books and yes they're all campy, but I sure have liked them.

In the sixteenth century, with the entire Catholic teaching on marriage and celibacy and its associated law and jurisdiction under attack by the Protestant reformers, the Council of Trent defined the doctrine as a dogma of faith for the first time but made major changes to it. Rather than focusing on a particular aspect of intellectual and institutional developments, this book examines them in depth and in detail from their ancient precedents to the Council of Trent.

Important work.

Important work. Finally some truth in the subject of Canaanite history and the rational analysis of the history of the region without having it just be a story canvassed by The Cult of Yahweh. Why has it taken so long to shed rational light on Levantine history outside the fairy tales of Yahwehists ( Christians, Muslims,...). This book is like pulling the rug from under Afro-Centrists who seek to see the history of the world from only their angle.

Bravo! Hopefully one day the true true history of the region will be known and its rich polytheistic traditions gain the attention they rightly deserve, and should have been given all along.

If you like historiography...

I recommend "The Invention of Ancient Israel" to anyone interested in how history is researched and written. It's more about historiography--the study of historical writing--than about history per se, although it includes much of the latter as a necessary consequence.

To everyone interested in this book--pro or con--I also highly recommend Prof. Hayden White’s work. Here are a few more quotes from Prof. White relevant to Prof. Whitelam’s themes:

From the article “The Burden of History,” in the journal “History and Theory,” Vol 5. No. 2:

"We choose our past in the same way we choose our future. The historical past therefore, is, like our various personal pasts, at best a myth, justifying our gamble on a specific future, and at worst a lie, a retrospective rationalization of what we have become through our choices."

Employing a Foucauldian geneology of history, Whitelam finally exposed the reproduction of truths biblical scholars have resorted to in an attempt to bestow legitimacy on their cause. Although, I read the book in Arabic, I felt compelled to comment on the original version and commend Whitelam's systematic and scientific methodology in exposing the myths that shroud the existence of the Zionist movement. Whitelam clearly draws a lot from Said's efforts in Orientalism furthuring the need to situate biblical discourse in the context of imperialism and colonial discourses. It is enough to remember that Israeli historians themsevles are beginning to question the body of 'knowledge' that was created during the course of the 20th century especially in light of the archeological discoveries that have failed to lend credence to the claim an ancient Israeli kingdom existedin the West Bank. In fact, all discoveries so far are corroborating the version of history that stipulates the existence of an Arab and Philistine socieities at the end of the Iron age and the early Bronze agg. The old testement itself contains many contradictions in relation to the manufactured history of the Zionists which served as the main source for biblical reconstructions of history.

If anyone has ever lived or wondered what life is like in the projects, this book is one example of that life. Imaginative, creative, and expressionary...The vivid display of life for Chaka in this novel captures the reader to become drawn to the next page. Excellent novel for a first time author and looking forward to the prequel and subsequent works.

In this insightful treatment of the Civil War (addressing the causes, the war itself and Reconstruction), Hummel's text argues against the thesis that armed confrontation was inevitable. "As an excuse for civil war," he says, "maintaining the States territorial integrity is bankrupt and reprehensible. Slavery's elimination is the only morally worthy justification." But slavery, he suggests, was on its way out in any case. Not only was it a political liability, but the institution's many-faceted costs (social cost, enforcement, uprisings, mistreatment) outweighed any profits. If, after decades of unsuccessful compromise, the North had recognized the South's revolutionary right to self-determination and had let the Gulf states secede, slavery would have succumbed in the border states. Hummel goes on to argue, as have many others before, that after a devastating war and the disappointment of Reconstruction, a federal government that once interfered only a little in the affairs of individual states "had been transformed into an overbearing bureaucracy that intruded into daily life with taxes, drafts, surveillance, subsidies and regulations." Hummel, a professor of history and economics at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, quotes David H. Donald, saying, "Before the Civil War, many politicians and writers referred to the United States in the plural"--i.e., the United States are, a grammatical agreement no longer used after 1865. Hummel (history and economics, Golden Gate Univ.) presents some uncomfortable truths for both sides of the Civil War. For the South, Hummel builds a case that the war was indeed about slavery. For the North, he shows that a war to preserve the union was morally bankrupt and that freeing the slaves was the only justifiable reason for fighting. Yet Hummel demonstrates that even a war for such a noble cause was probably unnecessary, since slavery was politically doomed in an independent South. Hummel also illustrates some of the cost of the war, such as Lincoln's suppression of political opposition, the closing of dissenting newspapers, and the creation of big government under Republicans Lincoln, Johnson, and Grant. a must-read for Civil War buffs

The main thing I got out of this book was just how damaging Lincoln was to the cause of freedom in America. Lincoln trampled individual rights, jailing people indefinitely on his whim, instating the draft, even assaulting freedom of speech (which I think is one of the few freedoms left). From Hummel's Libertarian perspective, Lincoln was probably the worst president in history. The one thing that should be pointed out in Lincoln's defense is that war always involves curtailments of liberty and requires an essentially fascistic operation of the government. The problem is that the increased governmental power doesn't go away after the war ends. I think this book is very timely at this moment in history, as our current president is about to lead us into yet another war. The Constitution says that only Congress can declare war. That means that the United States cannot engage in any military action with another country unless two-thirds of Congress approves it. Yet, look at all the presidents who have committed U.S. troops to war without a Congressional declaration. Why isn't this seen as unConstitutional? Why aren't they talking about it on Face the Nation? What gave Truman the right to commit U.S. forces to fight in Korea? Careful scholarship and clear thinking

Hummel is careful, fair, and concise as he lays out the factual threads that comprise the American Civil War. It isn't until the epilogue, however, that we see what he's been making with these threads--a noose capable of hanging the myths that we all learned in school. Myth 1: Secession would have been bad for Northern whites and Southern blacks. Myth 2: Secession would have been good for slaveholders. Myth 3: The Civil War was a necessary war. Myth 4: The war was the only way, or at least the best way, to free the slaves. Myth 5: The objective of the war was to free the Southern slaves. Myth 6: Lincoln was an American hero who advanced the cause of freedom and democracy.

In truth, the Civil War was an unnecessary monstrosity whose blame rests with political leaders on both sides of the fight, but primarily with the idolized Lincoln.

How we got today's welfare-warfare state

These days many of us wonder how it happened that the great ideals of the American Revolution, liberty and self-reliance, were overthrown and replaced by today's gigantic and ravenous welfare-warfare state. It is easy to blame Roosevelt and the New Deal, but many of his monstrous impositions only continued and expanded institutions that arose in the Progressive era earlier in the century. Hummel argues that we must look back farther, to the Civil War, as the beginning of the end of our Revolutionary experiment.

"The Civil War represents the simultaneous culmination and repudiation of the American Revolution," says Hummel. By ending slavery, it settled once and for all the great contradiction that had bedeviled the Republic from its beginning and whose resolution had been forestalled by several shaky Compromises prior to 1860. But while freeing the slaves, the War set the stage for the gradual enslavement of us all. The War legitimized the intrusion of the central government into virtually every aspect of our lives which is so evident today.

Slavery would have ended almost as quickly and at much lower costs in lives, treasure, and liberties, had the South been allowed to go peacefully, says Hummel. This is not because slavery was uneconomical -- it wasn't -- but because enforcement costs would have overwhelmed what Hummel calls the "peculiar institution." With secession, runaways would no longer have been captured and returned to the South. It would have been impossible for the Confederacy to effectively guard its long border. This would have virtually ended slavery in the border states of the South and eventually in the entire Confederacy.

Though Hummel's radical libertarian views will put off many

historians, they cannot ignore his careful scholarship and especially his extensive bibliographic essays. This is a seminal book that deserves careful study and follow-up.

About the Author

Gordon C. Nagayama Hall is Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Dr. Hall was previously a professor of psychology at Kent State University and the Pennsylvania State University. His research interests are in the cultural context of psychopathology. Dr. Hall is currently investigating cultural moderators of the effectiveness of treatments for depression with Asian Americans of treatments that are empirically-supported for other groups. This work is part of the Asian American Center on Disparities Research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Hall was President of the American Psychological Association Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45) and is the President of the Asian American Psychological Association from which he received the Distinguished Contribution Award. He is Editor of Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology and Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

American society is rapidly changing. Within 50 years, persons of color will be the majority in the United States and already compose one-third of the U.S. population. In California, persons of color are now the majority. Thus, competence in cultural issues is a necessary life skill for full participation in society during the twenty-first century.

Psychology has been slow to embrace the study of multicultural issues. Cross-cultural psychology has been the primary area in which psychology has examined culture. This approach typically examines two national groups that are not in the same social context. Conversely, multicultural psychology is the study of multiple cultural groups in the same context. Cultural groups influence one another when they are in the same sociocultural context; the strength of this influence is largely dependent on the power and status that cultural groups have in society. All the cultural groups discussed in this textbook have ethnic minority status. Thus, multicultural psychology is the study not only of culture, but also of the sociopolitical issues that ethnic minority persons face in the United States. Although cross-national issues are of importance in psychology, issues of dealing with persons of multiple cultural backgrounds in the United States are more likely to affect the lives of most American students. There are several cross-cultural psychology textbooks, but very few that address multicultural psychology within a single national and sociopolitical context.

This textbook is an introduction to cultural and minority status issues in psychology. The first section of the book provides a general context for multicultural issues in psychology. The section begins with an overview and definition of multicultural psychology. Traditional research methods are reviewed in the second chapter and the strengths and limitations of such methods in conducting research with women and persons of color are discussed. In the third and fourth chapters, we review how multicultural issues are addressed in biological, social, personality, and developmental psychology.

The second section of the book focuses on. specific issues involving women and ethnic minority groups, including African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Latino/a Americans, and American Indians. Issues of gender, class, and sexual orientation are integrated into the discussion of these groups. The traditional individual approach that has characterized much of Western psychology is inadequate to explain the multiple influences that impinge on persons of color in the United States. Thus, we use an ecological theoretical perspective in this book that examines individual, family, community, institutional, and societal influences on behavior. Each chapter in this section includes coverage of history, current demographics, cultural values and identity, developmental and family issues, and mental health. We review research that compares each ethnic group with European Americans and other groups in an effort to demonstrate that each of the groups covered has characteristics and experiences that are unique and unlike those of other groups. Although there are similarities between European Americans and each of the groups of color covered in this book, there are unique aspects of each group and much diversity within each group.

An important feature of this text is our attempt to make it relevant to "real-life" issues. At the end of each chapter, we include an "Issues for Discussion" section that raises contemporary issues relevant to the material covered in the chapter. Another unique feature of our book is that we include biographical profiles, including personal perspectives, of some of the most prominent psychologists of color. These persons are considered leaders in multicultural psychology and represent diverse ethnic and professional backgrounds.

Attempting to understand and to accurately represent the psychology of the many different groups and individuals covered in this text has been a daunting task. At various times, we have felt like outsiders trying to write about topics that are accessible only to insiders. We realize that it is difficult to accurately depict the diversity within our own Eurasian American and Filipino American groups, let alone other ethnic groups. Because this is a psychology textbook, we have primarily relied on the findings of empirical studies. However, there are many issues in multicultural psychology that have yet to be studied with an empirical approach. Moreover, there are many multicultural issues that may defy empirical study, such as traditional forms of spirituality. Many of our colleagues from many different ethnic backgrounds have been extremely helpful in reviewing drafts of this book, including Stan Sue, Fred Leong, James Jones, Tiffany Townsend, Ndiya Nkongho, and Gia Maramba. These colleagues have provided us with an insider's perspective on many of the groups and issues we discuss.

This textbook is an introduction to and an overview of multicultural psychology. Whole books and courses have been devoted to most of the individual topics covered here. A single textbook cannot comprehensively address all cultural groups and issues. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with tools to understand sociocultural issues in psychology. It is our hope that this textbook will whet the appetite of the reader to pursue additional studies in multicultural issues.

A Misnomer

This is not a book on Multicultural Psychology but a book about prejudice and discrimination. The title is a misnomer in that interpersonal relations among different ethnic groups are not addressed. What is addressed is prejudice in a far ranging scope that leaves little to the imagination as to its source. It neglects important topics, such as, how do relations among the ethnic diversities in America affect acculturation processes and strategies or even prejudice. The book presents prejudice as a one way street and makes several general statements, which appear to be the author's opinion, with no empirical support. The author indicates that the world judges people based on European American values as if ethnocentricism wasn't part of every culture. If you want some resources on prejudice and discrimination, you will find many in this book. However, it will require a careful critical reading to determine which of the author's interpretations are consistent with the data.

Good content, terrible editing

I am currently reading this book for a Masters class in Psychology and although I am enjoying the content of the book and find it to be quite interesting, I am completely put off by how many errors there are throughout the text! It is kind of unforgivable to publish a book, especially one that is used as a scholarly source, to be filled with so many errors. I will not share detailed examples due to copyright laws but if you take a look at page 47 at the end of the first paragraph the author mistakenly writes "that" when the correct word should have been "than". This was probably the 10th error that I had come across in only 47 pages! I do not understand HOW these errors were not corrected. All in all, I am disappointed in how the book has been put together and feel that it loses credibility when words are incorrect throughout the text.

As everyone stated. It's a pretty long boring required textbook. Loaded with a lot of terms and definitions but no real story line to make the reading pleasant to read. I suggest renting this texting opposed to buying it.

About the Author

Joe Poyer has written or co-written fourteen books on firearms using the part-by-part approach (which he originated) to the analysis of collectible firearms. By using factory and other records combined with the systematic examination of large numbers of the subject firearm and consultation with many collectors and authorities, his books in the For Collectors Only� series have made it possible for collectors to examine a subject firearm in a forensic manner to determine its authenticity. He has written over four hundred magazine articles on firearms, military history and the modern military, twelve novels with worldwide sales, and served as an on-camera military consultant to a large, independent television station in Southern California.

Excellent Content In A Cheap Package

I am a fan and collector of John Browning's creation that has seen service in two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and numerous other military operations throughout the world during the past 90+ years. So when this book came out I was among the first to get a copy and read it. The content is excellent and the information pertinent for the serious collector or admirer of these fine guns. Most of it is a re-hash of the information found in Charles Clawson's notable books, most of which are now out of print. I should also state that most of this information can now be found on the internet on various forums and newsgroups. For the price (nearly $40.00) I was expecting a quality book that would hold up under use. The book itself is little more than a cheap paperback printed on a mediocre grade of paper with a flimsy paper cover. I was disappointed with the quality of the book itself, and thought it was greatly over-priced for a paperback handbook. If you don't have another source for this information, you will probably need this book. If you don't want to spend nearly $40.00 for a cheap paperback, you may be able to get most of the information elsewhere. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate the content as a 10, while I rate the quality of the book itself as a 3. Overall, I would give it a 5-6.

For the knowledge & info in this book I definitely rate it a 5 star. It may be small in size but it is a huge wealth of info & history on the Colt 1911 / 1911A1 as well as the off-shoots built under license. I am very happy with this book although time will tell if it will structurally hold together ? In terms of price this book can't be beat ! I look at my collection of books on the 1911's & I really believe if you're just into Colts along with the off-shoots of the time (Springfield Armory,Remington Rand,Ithaca,Singer,etc,etc.)this book should definitely be on your shelf,in fact along with Walt Kuleck's book "The M1911 Complete Owner's Guide" really that's all a person would need to have for reference to enjoy these fine pistols.These two books cover it all at a decent price! THANKS Joe,Craig & all the team players involved in this book,
a definite asset for the Colt 1911 / 1911A1 owner & lover, 5 Stars !

Best reference in print!

I picked this up at the NGD in Louisville It is an excellent stand alone reference and a compliment to the Clawson volume. And with Karl Karash involved you know it will be accurate. $40.00 well spent and more bang for the buck compared to Clawsons book now over 700. The only downside is it's paperback and won't stand up to daily use.
