Sweetness in finding the right one

I have read several books by Erika Reed overs the years and enjoy watching her grow as a writer. This new series is set against the backdrop of a Seattle night club. In addition to Gianna's friends, we also meet the owners and employees of the club. Enough insight is given to all of these characters to provide creative fodder for future books in the series. The first book in the series focuses on two of the four owners who are attracted to Gianna. Bryce and Dylan Nash are brothers who have known that they wanted to settle down with a woman they can sha re. When they meet Gianna, they set out to build a relationship with her as individuals and as a group. While they are both different personalities, Gianna is pulled towards both of them equally. Their patience allows her the chance to build confidence in their unique relationship, and that is what I loved the most about them. Their's is a story of the sweetness found in finding that right person. They never push her: they allow her to come to her own decisions. Gianna has always measured herself as less than her friends, but through their eyes, she blossoms into the beautiful woman she always has been capable. I'm interested to see where the next dance at Club Cravings takes us in book 2!

I loved this book cannot wait for the next in the series! This was the second book that I have read by this author and she really knows how to hook you in, I could not put it down. Bryce and Dylan definitely had me swooning. I liked how the relationship built and how we got to see how Gianna learn how to be in this type of a realtionship. I really hope the other characters get their owns stories because I fell in love with them.

It is without doubt a valuable resource for those requiring a handy, well set out list of drugs. British Journal of Anaesthesia A useful functional text and a must have for the FRCA student for some years to come.

About the Author

Dr Susan Smith trained in medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care at Guy's Hospital, Oxford and America. She was appointed as a consultant in 1990 and was Director of Intensive Care in Cheltenham until 2008. She is Senior Medical Officer for Cheltenham Racecourse. Her interests include pharmacology, care of the critically ill patient and prehospital care of the injured casualty.


Dr Edward Scarth qualified in 2002 from Nottingham. He gained experience in A & E and General (Internal) Medicine gaining MRCP(UK) prior to commencing training in Anaesthesia in 2005. Dr Scarth has been a Speciality Registrar in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care since 2008 on a training rotation organized by the Bristol School of Anaesthesia (Severn Deanery), and gained FRCA in early 2010.

Indispensible

This is an indispensible reference for the budding anaesthetic registrar. I constantly refer to it in theatre or when studying.

Good features include the fact that it's a generally comprehensive yet concise description of the drugs it contains. It's a compact and robust little book (mine has a thick plastic cover), designed to be carried everywhere and treated badly.

I'd give it five stars except for the fact that it has a couple of annoying deficiencies, for a text aimed at an audience of anaesthetists and intensivists:

1. Its treatment of the halogenated vapours is pretty superficial. There's information there, but I don't think it really gives a sufficiently detailed picture of these drugs.

2. It is seriously light-on as regards NSAIDS, only including aspirin and diclofenac. Too bad if you want specific information regarding bread-and-butter drugs like ibuprofen, indomethacin or parecoxib.

3. Although a comprehensive set of pharmacodynamic effects are listed for most drugs, the logical inter-relationships between these is often omitted. I know that the authors needed to be concise, but sometimes the result is jumbled list of effects rather than a logical inter-relation.

(However, unlike what another reviewer reported, my 4th Ed does have a big section on cisatracurium.)

Despite all its faults, I'm still very happy to have bought it.

Excellent pocket guid for common (and uncommon) drugs used in anesthesia ; British handbook, so some of the medications may be named differently (suxamethonium instead of succinylcholine, glyceryl trinitrate instead of nitroglycerine) and some units and concentrations may be different than in North America.

This little book is missing a ton of meds... I bought it as a go-to for anesthesia school and was very disappointed. Don't waste your money.

Great and accurate book

This is a great book that was done in an objective and accurate way. A very interesting story about an age old religion with roots back over 5,000 years. The religion as common in India as Christianity is here in the USA and how it has spread worldwide by the grace of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Very nice book!

Part Two begins with a survey of elementary properties of convex sets and polyhedra and presents a proof of the Birkhoff theorem on doubly stochastic matrices. This is followed by a discussion of the properties of convex functions and a list of classical inequalities. This material is then combined to yield many of the interesting matrix inequalities of Weyl, Fan, Kantorovich and others. The treatment is along the lines developed by these authors and their successors and many of their proofs are included. This chapter contains an account of the classical Perron Frobenius-Wielandt theory of indecomposable nonnegative matrices and ends with some important results on stochastic matrices.
Part Three is concerned with a variety of results on the localization of the characteristic roots of a matrix in terms of simple functions of its entries or of entries of a related matrix. The presentation is essentially in historical order, and out of the vast number of results in this field the authors have culled those that seemed most interesting or useful. Readers will find many of the proofs of classical theorems and a substantial number of proofs of results in contemporary research literature.

A classic compilation of results in this field.

This book is not really a review of matrix theory; the focus is on inequalities, mainly for PD matrices, convex functions and eigenvalue problems. The book tries to present a general framework, a-la Hardy, but is not quite as successful. Nevertheless, if you need to find that elusive inequality that you saw in undergraduate, this book will likely contain it. This book should be on every mathematical researcher's shelf.

I have just read part I of the book (table of contents below), and I like it very much. So many information, on so few pages. Everything is threated in FULL generality, and proves are included for the main theorems. This book has also an excellent encyclopedia function, as it contains the main properties of anything that one can think of.
Beware: I have some mathematical background, and if you fully want to appreciate this book you will need this. (don't buy this book if this would be your first confrontation with matrices).

Very thorough for most practicing scientists and students

Although the text is not up-to-date (e.g., it states on pp. 129-130 that the van der Waerden conjecture on the permanent of stochastic matrices is still unresolved!), most classical results in matrix theory and analysis is presented in an unpretentious style and with due credit to the original contributions. Proofs are given with only a modicum of rigor for the more important and general theorems and some exemples (but not many) are worked out to illustrate the possibilities and limitations of the techniques.

On the downside, the book is typeset in a small type that makes it difficult to discern sub-subscripts and superscripts in some expressions. I am not nitpicking here: sometimes you cannot affirm if that index is an "i" or a "t", and if it is an "i_t" or a "t_i" it only gets worse. Given its enduring value, a new printing in a slightly larger font, say, 1pt up, would be a good service to its readership.

I prefer this title to the much more expensive (and not that much up-to-date) book by Horn & Johnson. If you cannot afford both, go with Marcus & Minc. I am not rating it 5 stars because of (i) its age, (ii) its annoying typeset (a minor issue, actually), and (iii) the typos, of the confusing kind. Otherwise, for the practicing scientist and engineer and for students looking for a cheap reference, I can only recommend this book.
