This is a departure from my usual thrillers, mysteries and young adult novels. Poetry isn't my thing and neither is meditation, I'm a talker! Yet, I found myself turning page after page, reading and re-reading each poem, looking forward to the next. Some dark...some whimsical, even. I could see myself revisiting these words and finding something new each time, learning more about the writer and maybe myself. Read it- it's a gift!

A new world opens...

Poetry has never been my thing. This book has opened my eyes to the experience of poetry, the beauty and sensuality and mysticism of it. I have never read anything that has raised such intense feelings and thoughts in me. Discussing these poems with a friend has shown me how different our impressions of the work are and how it can lead people to completely different places. That is fascinating to me. I want to read anything this poet writes. I feel such gratitude for having this world opened to me in a way I could access and process.

Profoundly moving

A most profound and deeply disturbing account of a childhood no child should ever have. Yet through it all, Martha does not give in to despair but keeps plodding on doing what she's told to do and has to do, to survive.
Martha shares the trauma of her experiences very realistically and yet the book never wallows in self pity but rather she interlaces the tough times with a great deal of humour and her rising mischievous and lively personality begin to shine through.
She carries the reader with her emotionally and absorbed to the very last page where she leaves you waiting to see how she fares in her next ventures in life.
What an amazingly talented writer from one who, because of such a neglected childhood, had to teach herself to read and write.

Ma, I'm getting meself a new mammy

I agree with the first reviewer, After reading the first book, I could not wait to start the second. Her journey continues where the last book leaves off. I thought it was great. The nun's were not easy to live with, but she does get back at them one way or another. It makes you laugh and then you feel so sad for her. She is still looking for love, for someone to tell her "she's worth something in life". The doors close, or should I say open, once again on her at the age of 16, where she is once again on her own, but she has a plan. I do hope there is another book to see where her life takes her. My hat is off to you Martha, Your children should be VERY proud of YOU.

An interesting look at another time. I found this entire series very interesting look at another culture and time. While it the first book is about abuse to some degree all of the series shows a look at the culture times and struggles of this girl through out her life.

Sakey, whose debut novel, The Blade Itself (2007), garnered a truckload of praise, returns with a chilling story that combines an ordinary couple’s desperation with a band of Chicago criminals’ unslaked thirst for revenge. It’s masterful in showing how the daily drip, drip of dreams deferred can lead people into peril. Sakey’s opening chapters juxtapose an unbearably tense murder-and-betrayal scene in a club against a domestic drama centered on a couple’s inability to conceive a child. Readers may feel a bit of whiplash with the contrast, but Sakey’s portrayal of the couple’s despair (to the tune of $15,000 per failed in vitro treatment) is essential to understanding their plight in the rest of the novel. The plot hinges, however, on one very creaky, contrived element. The couple owns a two-flat and rents the bottom unit to a taciturn, somewhat creepy tenant. The deus ex machina element comes in when the husband smells smoke, the couple investigates downstairs, and finds that where there’s smoke—there’s a pile of money just lying on the floor with the tenant conveniently dead. The couple is now $400,000 to the good, and the Chicago Police no wiser, but, of course, their troubles are just beginning. The dead tenant betrayed some very bad, well-connected criminals, who will stop at nothing to retrieve their money and exact revenge. Good People Better Than Good

Good People seems like a simple enough proposition. No leader deliberately picks mugs. Anthony Tjan takes it a fair bit deeper, defining "goods" in a holistic manner in which the term embraces people, purpose and process in business. Tjan dissects each aspect (like a good McKinsey alumni) and while this can sometimes make the book a bit laboured it does reflect intense reflection, research and interview. The author has credibility as an entrepreneur as well as an analyst and anyone looking for confirmation that business can succeed as a social as well as a profit making process without contradiction will find support here. I did.

Sigmund Freud infamously referred to women's sexuality as a “dark continent” for psychoanalysis, drawing on colonial explorer Henry Morton Stanley’s use of the same phrase to refer to Africa. While the problematic universalism of psychoanalysis led theorists to reject its relevance for postcolonial critique, Ranjana Khanna boldly shows how
bringing psychoanalysis, colonialism, and women together can become the starting point of a postcolonial feminist theory. Psychoanalysis brings to light, Khanna argues, how nation-statehood for the former colonies of Europe institutes the violence of European imperialist history. Far from rejecting psychoanalysis, Dark Continents reveals its importance as a reading practice that makes visible the psychical strife of colonial and
postcolonial modernity. Assessing the merits of various models of nationalism, psychoanalysis, and colonialism, it refashions colonial melancholy as a transnational feminist ethics.

Khanna traces the colonial backgrounds of psychoanalysis from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century up to the present. Illuminating Freud’s debt to the languages of archaeology and anthropology throughout his career, Khanna describes how Freud altered his theories of the ego as his own political status shifted from Habsburg loyalist to Nazi victim. Dark Continents explores how psychoanalytic theory was taken up in Europe and its colonies in the period of decolonization following World War II, focusing on its use by a range of writers including Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Octave Mannoni, Aim� and Suzanne C�saire, Ren� M�nil, Frantz Fanon, Albert Memmi, Wulf Sachs, and Ellen Hellman. Given the multiple gendered and colonial contexts of many of these writings, Khanna argues for the necessity of a postcolonial, feminist critique of
decolonization and postcoloniality.

A Good P-Chem Supplement!

Everyone knows P-Chem is one of the harder chemistry courses out there, and one of the main reasons is that most of the P-Chem textbooks are so poorly written. Tough this book is not a textbook, in some ways it surpasses the major P-Chem textbooks in use out there because it takes complicated p-chem concepts and breaks them down into simpler concepts.

Like I said earlier, this is not really a textbook - in fact, it is more like a workbook. Each section begins with descriptive information about a subject followed by related questions that stack on each other that as you answer them lead you to understanding the larger concept at-hand.

This book is great for studying for exams - or at least the ones I took in P-Chem II and the American Chemical Society (ACS) final exam.

The reason I gave it four stars instead of five was that sometimes it asks you to draw conclusions that are a little too far apart based on the information you're given, and I think the author (Moog) might be forgetting what it's like to be learning this for the first time. It might help to also obtain the solutions manual (ISBN: 978-0618308576 or 0618308571). I had it and found that looking at some of the problem's solutions helped me to understand what direction they were trying to lead me.

All-in-all a pretty useful book, and an improvement when it comes to P-Chem resources.

Very good main text

My school uses this as the main text book, we work through it in small groups and it works well. It covers all the main points in Physical Chemistry, and does a very good job with it. We have another text for supplementary, but this does the job by itself. It's very informative, and has some little light points and jokes. Very good.

Missing pages!

Pages 317-341 were missing from my workbook as if they were never printed. Being this is a workbook, I needed all the pages for homework and now I cannot complete them unless I hand-write everything from someone else for the 30 page chunk that is missing.
