About the Author

Edward G. Pita is Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor in the Environmental Control Technology Department at New York City Technical College of the City University of New York. He received a B.S. degree from Purdue University, an M.S. degree from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, all in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and is a registered professional engineer.

In addition to his career as an educator, Dr. Pita was chief mechanical engineer for a large consulting engineering firm responsible for HVAC projects for the United Nations, the State City of the Vatican, the U.S. Capitol, and many other governmental and private clients.

He has also worked in applications and systems engineering for the Carrier Corporation and the Worthington Corporation.

This fourth edition of Air Conditioning Principles and Systems has been significantly revised. Reflecting recent developments and concerns in the industry, substantial material has been added on indoor air quality, air pollution from combustion, and the new environmental requirements on refrigerants. Consistent with the overall philosophy of this text, the practical approach to these important issues will enable the reader to effectively address them in the workplace.

Use of the Internet for air conditioning work is a major component of this fourth edition. Many Websites of equipment manufacturers are listed. Problems are assigned that make use of these Web sites for equipment performance, selection, and specifications, and to ask and receive answers to technical questions. Web sites of HVAC design software providers are also listed. These offer heating and cooling load calculations, duct and pipe sizing, psychrometrics, and energy analysis. Problems are also assigned in these areas. Use of design software often entails a fee and restrictions, of course. The Web sites and software listed in the text are only a small sample of those available, and are not necessarily the only useful ones. A search will discover many more.

In addition to incorporating new material, many chapters have been considerably revised or amplified to enhance the learning process.

This book is a fundamental text in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). It fills the need for a text that presents the fundamental principles and systems in a manner that is technically accurate, yet of practical use in the working world. Today's reality, which mandates time and cost effectiveness in HVAC work, dictates this practical approach. The text begins by developing the fundamental principles of air conditioning, followed by a description of equipment and systems. The text emphasizes the application of theory to both designing new systems and troubleshooting existing ones. This approach is enhanced by many illustrative examples and problems dealing with real situations.

An underlying theme throughout the book is energy utilization and conservation. Energy codes and standards are described, and each topic is examined from an energy conservation viewpoint, an approach that is essential for all future work in the air conditioning field. A chapter is devoted to solar heating and cooling.

Following an overview of the scope of air conditioning, the text reviews physical principles. Heating and cooling load calculations are explained in a thorough yet understandable manner. The latest methods (now required by most states) are used. The newly revised design weather data is included. Load calculation forms are furnished to aid the student. The subject of psychrometrics is presented in considerable detail, recognizing that it is at the heart of understanding air conditioning processes.

Air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems are covered thoroughly. Equipment construction and selection are described. Included in the discussion are reheat, dual duct, multizone, hydronic, and variable air volume systems. The presentation of refrigeration includes an explanation of absorption systems, heat pumps, and the scroll compress.

Instrumentation and balancing and the fundamentals of automatic controls are covered in separate chapters. Of special importance is the chapter devoted to energy utilization and conservation in design, installation, and operation of air conditioning systems.

Two example projects in the design of a heating and cooling system are worked out in detail. Similar projects are suggested as hands-on learning experiences. These should be of value to those who are interested in installation, operation, and service as well as design, because they require the student to analyze how the system functions.

The author sincerely hopes that this presentation, based on his more than 55 years of experience in the field working for manufacturers, as a consulting engineer, and as an educator, will contribute to your knowledge and success in the HVAC industry.

Packs a lot of info into a small package. Good starting point for learning more systems in depth. The HVAC ocean is deep and wide, but with this you have a map.

Decent text, but needs a workbook companion.

The text is pretty good. Straight forward, not too theoretical. But as a text for class, it would be really good if the problems at the end of each chapter had solutions or final answers. That's pretty typical of text books, every other question has an answer, so you can get an idea if you're doing things correctly. Without answers, it's somewhat like the blind leading the blind.

I rented this text. The binding is shot. Pages are literally falling out. I don't know if that is from significant use from previous renters, or just poor quality by the publishers. Possibly both?

Book has sole

If anyone would have told me I would have enjoyed a book about athletic shoes I would have taken umbrage and considered them somewhat lacking in the gray matter area. How wrong I would have been! This book is a whole lot of fun. And no tongue in cheek here. Fun to reminisce about different athletic shoes by various manufacturers through the ages that most of us have worn or have at least been privy to seeing. The book does focus on the major brands like Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc., but does also highlight and showcase other manufacturers and models of shoes. Heard is British, so some of the shoes probably were not available on this side of the Atlantic. A few of the shoes I wouldn't mind having now. Yo MTV Raps Big Daddy Kane shoes from Puma! What more could anyone ever ask for? Heard likes his shoes and it shows! Not sure I will cancel my membership in the New Balance owners' forum for Air Jordan 3s on eBay, but............ Fun book. Easy read that is well worth the effort to read.

Good starting point for an education on sneakers

A British book from 2003 which would explain its page-count preference for showcasing the likes of Adidas but nonetheless this is a frothy and enthusiastic look at what is Neal Heard's 'All-Time Favorite Footwear Brands' with serviceable showcases of specific models and color-forms. The overall curating is nicely executed with a near perfect text to image ratio and a narrative style fully appropriate to the subject matter.

Blues People 50 Years Later?

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the classic music history, Blues People, that propelled Jazz Studies into the college curriculum. 50 years ago, university scholars did not allow their students to study Blues and Jazz; but outside of school a young LeRoi Jones was introduced to the study of the Blues at the home library of Professor Sterling Brown, the renowned Blues School poet. In some ways Blues People is the product of a young writer searching for his own voice in the poetic insights of the music. Students may study the path from LeRoi Jones and Blues People to Amiri Baraka and Digging: The Afro-American Soul of American Classical Music by way of "Black Music" and "The Music" in the middle of that trajectory.

This October the Schomburg Center will host the symposium: Blues People: 50 Years Later with Amiri Baraka, Ingrid Monson and John Szwed. check it out on the First Thursday series in Harlem.

Detailed but not through

If you already get the big picture about blues, jazz, or are a listener, this is a good book to read to gain an even more intricate knowledge about the history, development, and sentiment of blues and jazz in America. If you are a total blues or jazz noobie, this book is not very through and tends to focus on more detailed subjects, you might find yourself lost, or juggling with different genres, time periods, and people. Personally, after reading this book, I saw a side of blues that I never knew and thus am more careful about what I call blues, or jazz. Since the book was written around the 60's, the book ends about around bebop, or rock n' roll.

Amiri Baraka (aka Leroy Jones) wrote a book about the move from Africa to slavery and from slavery to citizenship, and from "African to Negro" in his words. As music was the most profound artistic expression of this move, Baraka analyses each stage of social change through the music it produced.
As Baraka concentrates on the process, he does not put any emphasis on names and details of the musicians. The book is not in any way a list of "who's who in Blues or Jazz".
The book is critical of American mainstream culture, describing it as shallow and un-creative. Baraka observes that Blacks who have tried to belong to the mainstream (white) society have not been able to produce any music of value. He believes that their rejection of their Blues (slavery) roots made them too as shallow and un-creative as the society they wanted to join.
Baraka is most knowledgeable of Bebop and its developments up to free Jazz, as they are the closest to his generation. He is admittedly less connected to country blues, which for him expresses the first stage in the post slavery black society.
The book is magnificent in its originality and boldness. I think it is essential reading for anyone interested in African American music and/or culture.

About the Author
Peter Inness is a lecturer in the Meteorology Department of Reading University having previously been a Reasearch fellow in the Climate Division of the NERC funded National Centre for Atmospheric Science based at the University of Reading.

Steve Dorling is Senior Lecturer and Researcher in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Steve is also Innovations Director at UEA-based Weatherquest Ltd.

One of the best 1st person descriptions of the Bulge

Charles MacDonald's "Company Commander" is one of the classic books of WW2. MacDonald's wartime memoirs were originally published in 1949, so his recollections were still fresh, and it does read better than most of the WW2 vet's stories written 30, 40 or more years after the fact.
MacDonald was a 19 year old OCS graduate Captain when he took over a Infantry company in the 2nd Infantry Division. This was a veteran formation in Sept '44, it's not hard to imagine the difficulties faced by a green 19 or 20 year-old CO. MacDonald doesn't cut himself or those he leads slack, however and he honestly describes his accomplishments and screw-ups. By October his unit is poised on the Seigfried line and participates in the attempts to seize the Roer river damns. This is where he is when Hitler's Ardennes offensive breaks out, for me this was the heart of the book. You read in crushing detail as his command is smashed, steamrolled by German Panthers and panzergrenadiers outside Krinkelt-Rocherath. (Go to those towns in Belgium today and you will find a sad line of foxholes where MacDonald describes them-made all the more sad by knowing what took place there.) MacDonald describes the fighting retreats and pitched battles well-a WW2 company commander was never far from the front.
He was eventually wounded, and after recovery commanded a different company in the 2nd ID. The 2nd half of the book details the Spring offensives and eventual destruction of the Reich. There are some great combat descriptions there also such as when his company takes a battery of German quad 20mm guns.
This book is often described as a company commander's textbook, it may be that, but don't run away because you aren't a CO or planning on being one, this is, primarily in my book, excelent 1st person history. I can't believe this is out of print, don't know how much longer my Bantam "Combat Series" paperback will hold up...

This is a riveting account of my Father's WW2 experience .

On the day of my Father's funeral last month , a long-time friend of his gave me this book and explained that it was about my Father's WW2 experience .My Dad was a very gentle man , and a pillar of our community . He never mentioned the awful details of what he had gone through . When he spoke of the war , he would recall certain events that were not too awful . My siblings and I grew up with a healthy respect for the truth he spoke , that "WAR is Hell " , that it was "Tough" . I can see his contorted expression as he emphasised these words . Now I know the "real" story . My Dad was the First Lieutenant directing 81MM mortar fire , as described on page 301 . His real name was Ernest S. Compton Jr. of Greenwood , SC . As a 1942 graduate of Clemson Military College , he was also a "green" Officer in The 23rd Infantry . After VE Day , he was an Assistant to The Train Commander , Captain Macdonald , that brought the men home . This book is extremely accurate and matches my Father's records and photographs . My everlasting gratitude and respect go to these Combat Infantry-men that answered the call . I highly reccomend this book to children of WW2 Veterans or anyone else interested in the day-to-day activities of "The Footsloggers"

A Classic War Memoir

Captain Charles B. MacDonald first commanded I Company, 3-23rd IN, 2nd ID from October 1944 to January 1945 and later G Company, 2-23rd IN from March to May 1945. This memoir was written a few years after the war when recollections were still sharp and resulted in a very detailed account of what it was like to take command of a line infantry company and lead it into battle. This book is a must-read for all army officers who seek to command at company-level and it is also informative for military historians as well.
In comparison to the more recent Band of Brothers, ostensibly a company-level account of E Company, 506th PIR's actions during the same period, Charles MacDonald's book is clearly superior. In fact, Company Commander is everything Band of Brothers is not: accurate, objective and informative. Unlike BOB, MacDonald does not claim that the companies he commanded were anything special or that he demonstrated heroic leadership (he did win the silver star in the Battle of the Bulge). Instead, the author is very honest, admitting his apprehension and anxiety about commanding infantry on the front line. Although there is some tension with battalion and regimental headquarters, mostly about ill-considered orders and creature comforts, there is not the character assassination that is so prevalent in BOB; Macdonald was career army and he wasn't going to make points by ridiculing superiors.
MacDonald arrived as a replacement and took command of I Company just as the unit was conducting a relief-in-place of another US unit in some captured positions in the Siegfried Line in the Ardennes. While civilian readers may find the first 100 pages devoted to this "quiet time" to be dull, military readers will not. MacDonald does a superb job describing the nuts-and-bolts of a relief-in-place in a difficult position that is under enemy observation and then the daily grind to improve the position. Readers who believe that US units in the Ardennes in the fall of 1944 had it easy should reconsider. MacDonald's unit was under constant mortar and sniper fire, poor weather caused much sickness among the troops and supplies were limited. On 17 December 1944, MacDonald's battalion was hastily shifted to blunt the massive German Ardennes offensive but the 12th SS Panzer Division overran his company. Fortunately, losses in MacDonald's company were relatively light and when the unit was reformed it helped to stop the northern German pincer on the Elsenborn Ridge. In January 1945, the author was wounded while participating in the counterattack to retake St. Vith and spent two months recovering.
Returning to the 23rd Infantry in March 1945, MacDonald was given G Company and he led this unit in the final dash across Germany to Leipzig. MacDonald ended the war in Czechoslovakia. The final three weeks of the war seem a bit blurry here, compared to the earlier slow pace in the defense, and this is the only aspect of the author's narrative which is a bit choppy. There is a tremendous amount of combat wisdom in this account, although the author admits mistakes. During the first day of the Bulge, MacDonald's unit - which had very little ammunition, limited fire support and no information on the friendly or enemy situation - was ordered to launch a hasty attack to relieve a trapped US unit. MacDonald's account of his briefing to his lieutenants in the dark with a wet map is striking: "I wondered if I could have drawn any worse conditions under which to issue my first attack order." The attack was cancelled, but then MacDonald's company was ordered to hold off the advance guard of the 12th SS Panzer with only 3 bazooka rounds and no mines. The result was inevitable.
This account offers some tactical points about US ground operations in 1944-5 of interest to historians. First, US units often seemed to move to contact the enemy with minimal regard for reconnaissance and US commanders seemed to prefer hasty over deliberate assaults. Many US losses seemed directly attributable to this tendency to launch hasty, poorly coordinated attacks with inadequate forces. Second, US units often did not make good use of terrain. In the defense, MacDonald's company often had to occupy non-key terrain that lacked cover and concealment. Occupying such exposed positions merely to maintain contact with the enemy resulted in unnecessary casualties. US units would have been better off to occupy key terrain further back from the line of contact and leave only small covering units in direct contact. Interestingly, MacDonald's unit did not use LP/OPs at night. Finally, the decimation of US infantry units in the Second World War as portrayed by modern author's such as Stephen Ambrose is demonstrably false. Although MacDonald's company suffered many wounded and sick during the fall of 1944, he did not have one soldier killed in action in his first two months on the front line. Even in the Battle of the Bulge, the number of infantrymen actually killed in combat was relatively small. Soldiers were far more likely to be wounded or evacuated for pneumonia than to be killed outright, and those men usually returned in weeks or months. American infantry units were never "bled white" by combat losses as some accounts imply by exaggerating the body count. Overall, Company Commander is a class of its own as a memoir, since a capable historian who actually experienced the events described wrote it.

About the Author
Michael Hitt is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Texas A&M University and a Distinguished Research Fellow at Texas Christian University. Michael received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. He has coauthored or coedited 26 books and authored or coauthored many journal articles. A recent article listed him as one of the 10 most cited authors in management over a 25-year period. The Times Higher Education 2010 listed him among the top scholars in economics, finance and management based on the number of highly cited articles he has authored. A recent article in the Academy of Management Perspectives lists him as one of the top two management scholars in terms of the combined impact of his work both inside (i.e., citations in scholarly journals) and outside of academia. He has served on the editorial review boards of multiple journals and is a former editor of the Academy of Management Journal and a former coeditor of the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. He received the 1996 Award for Outstanding Academic Contributions to Competitiveness and the 1999 Award for Outstanding Intellectual Contributions to Competitiveness Research from the American Society for Competitiveness. He is a fellow in the Academy of Management and in the Strategic Management Society, a research fellow in the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers and received an honorary doctorate from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He is a former president of both the Academy of Management and of the Strategic Management Society and a member of the Academy of Management's Journals' Hall of Fame. He received awards for the best article published in the Academy of Management Executive (1999), Academy of Management Journal (2000), the Journal of Management (2006), and the Family Business Review (2012).

R. Duane Ireland is a University Distinguished Professor and holder of the Conn Chair in New Ventures Leadership in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. He teaches strategic management courses at all levels. He has more than 200 publications. His research, which focuses on diversification, innovation, corporate entrepreneurship, strategic entrepreneurship, and the informal economy, has been published in an array of journals. He has served as a member of multiple editorial review boards and is a former editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He has been a guest editor for 12 special issues of journals. He is a past president of the Academy of Management. Dr. Ireland is a fellow of the Academy of Management and a fellow of the Strategic Management Society. He is a research fellow in the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers and received an award in 1999 for Outstanding Intellectual Contributions to Competitiveness Research from the American Society for Competitiveness. He received the Falcone Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar Award from Syracuse University in 2005, the USASBE Scholar in Corporate Entrepreneurship Award from USASBE in 2004, and the Riata Distinguished Entrepreneurship Scholar award from Oklahoma State University in 2014. He received awards for the best article published in Academy of Management Executive (1999), the Academy of Management Journal (2000), and the Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship (2010). He received an Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Research from Texas A&M University (2012). Robert E. Hoskisson is the George R. Brown Chair of Strategic Management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Irvine. Dr. Hoskisson's research topics focus on corporate governance, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate and international diversification, and cooperative strategy. He teaches courses in corporate and international strategic management, cooperative strategy, and strategy consulting. He has coauthored 26 books, including recent books on business strategic and competitive advantage. Professor Hoskisson has served on several editorial boards for such publications as the Strategic Management Journal (current Associate Editor), Academy of Management Journal (Consulting Editor), Journal of International Business Studies (Consulting Editor), Journal of Management (Associate Editor) and Organization Science. His research has appeared in over 130 publications, including the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Perspective, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, California Management Review, and the Journal of World Business. He is a fellow of the Academy of Management and a charter member of the Academy of Management Journal's Hall of Fame. He is also a fellow of the Strategic Management Society and has received awards from the American Society for Competitiveness and the William G. Dyer Alumni award from the Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University. He completed three years of service as Representative-at-Large for the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and currently serves as Past President and is on the Executive Committee of Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society.

FALSE ADVERTISING! Cases are NOT included!

Does not include the cases! Inaccurate description posted by Amazon on this book! It states, "STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT: COMPETITIVENESS AND GLOBALIZATION, CONCEPTS AND CASES, Eleventh Edition" in the product description area. However, it does NOT have the cases, only concepts. This cost me time and money and made my first assignments for the course late. Amazon you need to fix this false advertising!

Cases are not included, Please buy with caution!

This was not the right textbook that I needed. I was unaware that this version of the 11e did not come with case studies. No ware in the product description does it say that the cases are not included or sold separately. If you are luck enough the find the same textbook with the cases, you're in luck. This is what is ISBN-13 should be for the textbook including concepts and cases: 978-1285425177. This is the textbook, the one I purchased, that includes only the concepts ISBN-13: 978-1285425184. Also both of the two textbooks share the same reviews and what makes this even more confusing is that as of 2/20/17 Amazon is using the product cover page of the concepts and cases version for both version of the textbook; so visually you cannot tell them apart. This rating is not so much as a reflection of the content in the textbook, but the misleading nature in which both version of this textbook are being sold. Please buy with caution!

This is a great book, however beware that if you need the case studies for your class you need to order the correct ISBN: 978-1-285-42517-7. Don't make the mistake I made! :)
