Not what you can see in the look inside

I have sent back the book to Amazon. While you can see color photos in the "look inside" at the Amazon's website, the book comes with tiny black and white photos at very low resolution. Thus, it is impossible for instance, to see the position of the hands in specific techniques. Moreover, although the Korean text is good for those who speak Korean but I find the author should focuse in one language and count on translated editions for other markets. This would reduce notably the size of the book and could include further explanations about each technique, which I also found them very limited.

Great book to use as a technical reference, with technique names in korean and english.

The book gives a pretty good overview over most techniques common to various Hapkido styles, and also adds a bunch of functional ground techniques not commonly taught in Hapkido. As another reviewer commented, the book I received had photos in b/w, instead of in color as seen in the preview, which make it harder to see what's going on in some of the photos. However, as I already know most of the techniques in the book, I will primarily use it as a technical reference, and for that role it's perfect.

Also, as someone else pointed out, the text in the book is in both korean and english, with each technique first described in korean(in hangul nonetheless), and then in english, with the name of most techniques spelled out in korean hangul, romanized hangul and then english. I think this is great, as I finally have learned correct korean names for several of the techniques I have only learned with numbers or names in english or in my native language earlier, and the fact that each technique is also described in korean, makes it much easier to practice them with koreans who may not speak any of the languages I do.

The ground fighting portion of the book seems for the most part to be lifted straight out of BJJ (including the names of the techniques, such as butterfly guard, americana, omoplata, etc.). That said, the ground techniques presented is all good, practical and mostly basic BJJ of white and blue belt level, and should complement traditional hapkido practitioners game well.

All in all a very good book, but i can imagine that the fact that the photos i B/W can be a turnoff for some people, especially since all the techniques is demonstrated by two people both wearing white doboks/gis against a gray background.

This book could serve as either a textbook for a philosophy of mind class or as a tool with which one can teach oneself these concepts. The basic setup of the book is quite helpful and informative. Morton begins each section with a lengthy commentary on the readings that will follow; these typically involve a discussion of the historical background of a particular philosophy, key terms, and a detailed discussion of the excerpt or essay contained in the section. The book includes a glossary but suffers from a lack of an index; the process of locating a term mentioned in an introduction, for example, tends to be quite complicated. The text "begins at the beginning" with Plato, Aristotle, Galileo, and a great deal of information and readings about and by Descartes. The actual philosophies it covers are: dualism, monism (materialism and idealism), logical behaviorism, linguistic philosophy, mind-brain identity theory, artificial intelligence, functionalism, and eliminative materialism. Each of these typically has 2-3 thinkers represented in terms of essays and excerpts, and the sections vary from about 20 to 40 pages apiece. Morton almost always provides a large and well-excerpted chunk of reading, which, coupled with the detail he provides in his commentary, will help in making a person able to discuss and understand the positions detailed here. The book concludes with a lengthy section on consciousness (featuring Nagel's famous essay "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?" plus three other readings) and a somewhat confusing section on Intentionality (perhaps the most confusing section of the book). Morton's commentary, overall, is clear and helpful; the philosophies covered here are quite complex, but his writing and careful choosing of reading material makes them easier to grasp.

Doug Ensley is a full professor at Shippenshburg University with a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon.� He is an active participant in national and regional committees determining the future of the discrete math curriculum, and he regularly speaks at Joint Math and MathFest.

Winston Crawley is a full professor and chair of the math department at Shippensburg University.� He has a Ph.D. from University of Tennessee-Knoxville.� Crawley developed the undergraduate computer science curriculum at Shippensburg.

wonderful problems and solutions

This book is much less conventional than the other established texts for freshman or sophomore discrete math/computer science courses. It places more emphasis on math problem solving, and contains a wonderful selection of interesting and challenging problems based on puzzles and games.

My impression of reading through the book is the focus is more on establishing a solid foundation on mathematical reasoning; using discrete math puzzles and games as examples in achieving the goal. It also contains much less of boring computational/ algorithmic worked examples than regular texts. This makes the book immensely more useful for math enthusiats and high-school math competition contestants, in addition to its regular use in courses for math majors in universities. Computer science majors with a focus on algorithm and programming may feel the book has too much of a math-centric problem solving focus, and probably should look elsewhere.

Overall, a fascinating read; highly recommended.

This is a great book. The authors present things very clearly and it's easy to follow. The authors put quite a lot of personality into the text as well, this made it pretty enjoyable to read through before/after lectures.
