Guardian by Angela Knight
By jjmachshev
"Guardian" is a wonderful addition to Angela Knight's 'Time Hunters' series which began with "Jane's Warlord". I can't tell you how many times I've read the the first few books in this series. I love the way Ms. Knight writes her heroes and heroines and this stuff is pure fantasy with the added bonus of really, really hot sex!

Riane is the daughter of the couple from "Jane's Warlord". She's had to deal with the prejudice of being neither aristocrat nor a bioengineered warfem like her father. She's happy working as a Temporal Enforcer -- preventing time travel crimes and chasing down those who manage to commit them if they aren't prevented. When she's offered the chance to go after the traitor who tried to kill her parents, she's ready to rock! But her suit malfunctions and strands her in the 21st century --with her enemy waiting...and a man who is either her savior or another traitorous Xeran.

Nick's been an orphan since the age of fourteen when his mother was apparently killed by the creatures the two of them had run from as long as he could remember. He didn't see his mother die. However, as soon as the green armband she'd always worn appeared magically on his arm, he just 'knew' she was gone. The glowing armband has saved his life more times than he can count as he's still on the run from the creatures. The armband somehow gives him access to enhanced knowledge and powers; so he's used these abilities to save innocent lives and stay one step ahead of the bad guys. Then one night, his armband leads him to HER. It's the grown-up version of the girl he 'saw' in a vision years ago. But how can he say that to her...she'll think he's nuts! Of course, the best thing to do would be to help her escape the creature trying to kill her before he tries to explain anything!

When I read Angela Knight, I can almost picture myself in her books. Her characters become friends I remember long after I finish their books and I'm always happy when 'old' friends get a scene (or more!) in later stories. While her characters don't waste much time before getting to the 'good stuff', there's always a plot reason for it that makes sense to me--not just sex for shock value. The plots are engaging; with enough twists, turns, and flips to ensure I can't get complacent since I can't predict where she'll head next.

I appreciate the fact that Ms. Knight doesn't overwhelm me with science, even though these stories have scenes in the far future. She gives me enough information to understand the technology used, without resorting to 'rocket science' I wouldn't understand. I'm not a scientist...and I honestly don't want to become one, so scientific jargon just jars me.

When I figured out who Raine's parents were, I was worried Angela Knight was going to end this series I enjoy so much. No worries, though; towards the end of the book it becomes obvious there's more stories to come set in this fascinating world. 'The Time Hunters' series is a cool mix of mystery, fantasy, science fiction, suspense, and really hot sex. It should come as no surprise that all these books sit on my keeper shelf -- "Guardian" is the latest to join the group and the only downside to having read it is that now I know I'll have to wait impatiently for the next one.

Time Hunters Series
By Elaine C McTyer
Knight has the ability to reach out and drag you into any universe she imagines. This is a sequel to WARRIOR and it is stand alone good. I hope the next one is as good as this one.

Nick Wyatt is alone, he is really alone since he has powers that place him apart from the rest of humanity. He has spent the last 16 yrs since the death of his mother, saving lives and dispensing justice to those who are able to escape the law. On his 14th birthday his mother is murdered by the aliens they have been running from all his life. He also saves the life of a young girl who has been kidnaped. He lets her wolf know where she is so he can lead her father to her.

Riane Arvid is 12 when she is kidnaped by a Xeran, as he starts to torture her, she is rescued by her father. Now 16 yrs later she is a member of the Enforcers. Those dedicated to preventing criminal time travelers from distorting the time lines.

In the year 2009 a group of Xeran's trap her in time and she is rescued by Nick. She doesn't know who he is but his unusual powers make her think that he is another time traveler. Nick is fasinated by a woman who is almost as powerful as he is. Both are attracted to the other and the romance is hot.

They must find a way back to the future and there is a mole in the Enforcers. Suddenly the facts are pointing to the woman who dated the last mole they uncovered. The future is just as hot as the past and so many secrets are about to be uncovered.

I loved it. Great reading.

Nick Wyatt has been on the run his entire life. His mother and he barely stayed one step ahead of the people hunting them. When the horrific happens and Nick's mother is killed, he is left alone to grow up not knowing why he is being hunted by a race of killers called the Xerans. Nick thinks he is a human - he doesn't realize that he is half Xeran. Nick's Xeran half is what has given him almost superhero powers - he is quick to heal and extraordinarily strong. What he has in his possession, however, is the reason he is a target - Nick has an artifact that the Xerans want and they will continue to hunt him down until they find it.

Riane Arvid and her canine helper Frieka live in the future. Riane is a police officer and a member of the Temporal Enforcement Agency. She and her fellow officers have been given a lead on the traitor they are after and so she and Frieka, after being given their duties, begin their journey to find Ivar Terje. The minute she leaves the regeneration tube, she realizes that her T-suit has been messed with and unable to stop, Riane time travels through time and space until she finally lands in 2009, in the state of South Carolina. Sick and without power, Riane is almost helpless. It's a good thing that Nick Wyatt arrives when he does; he saves Riane from being food for the cyborg, Ivar Terje.

I don't know how she does it but every single time I read an Angela Knight release, I am spellbound and in awe at her ability to take a world, make it realistic, and then pull me into that same world so completely that I do not want to leave. GUARDIAN is such a book. From scene one until the end, I couldn't read fast enough to find out what was going to happen. I winced, I smiled, and I got a bit emotional when finding out about Riane's childhood as well as reliving Nick's. The chemistry and sexual tension between these two endearing and strong characters is smoldering hot and erotic. The fight scenes are dynamic and well, basically, there was nothing I didn't like.

GUARDIAN is the second book of Angela Knight's The Time Hunters series. As such I highly recommend reading book one, WARRIOR, but if that isn't possible, GUARDIAN works very well as a stand-alone. Just be aware that GUARDIAN starts off after WARRIOR ends. Don't miss this heady and futuristic novel, it is awesome!

Social media platforms have captured the attention and imagination of many millions of people, enabling their users to develop and display their creativity, to empathize with others, and to find connection, communication and communion. But they are also surveillance systems through which those users become complicit in their own commercial exploitation. In this accessible book, Graham Meikle explores the tensions between these two aspects of social media.

From Facebook and Twitter to Reddit and YouTube, Meikle examines social media as industries and as central sites for understanding the cultural politics of everyday life. Building on the new forms of communication and citizenship brought about by these platforms, he analyzes the meanings of sharing and privacy, internet memes, remix cultures and citizen journalism. Throughout, Social Media engages with questions of visibility, performance, platforms and users, and demonstrates how networked digital media are adopted and adapted in an environment built around the convergence of personal and public communication.

Goddess: Myths of the Female Divine, by David Adams Leeming, Jake Page

An old woman lives still among the broken slopes of the mountains in the land of the Tarahumara Indians. No one knows exactly where. She is sometimes seen standing along the highway near El Paso, hauling wood near Oaxaca, or even hitching a ride on a semi rig. She is the bone woman, the gatherer, La Loba. She collects bones, especially those of wolves. When she has collected enough bones to make a whole wolf, she sings over the skeleton, and it begins to grow flesh and fur. She sings some more and the wolf becomes strong; then it breathes. La Loba keeps singing and soon the wolf leaps up and runs off while the desert world trembles. And when a ray of the sun, or the moon, strikes it at just the right time and place, it turns into a woman, a laughing woman, who you may see running toward the horizon.

In La Loba's cycle of death and rebirth and her metamorphosis from crone to life-giving mother to laughing maiden, we catch just one glimpse of the timeless allure and mystery of the Goddess. From the fertile earth mothers of the ancient world to the modern revival of interest in Wicca, or witchcraft, images and tales of the Female Divine have flourished and waned, intimidated, comforted, and inspired women and men from time immemorial. In Goddess, authors David Leeming and Jake Page gather some 75 of the most potent and meaningful of these tales in an extraordinarily rich and readable introduction to this divine figure as she has emerged from prehistory to the present.

Told as a biography, we follow Goddess from her first Ice Age appearances as the all-encompassing, all-giving, and all-taking Earth, to her re-emergence as a powerful force in the myths of modern religion, psychology, and science. In tales of the Changing Woman of the Navajos and of Hera, Pandora, Eve, and Lilith, we see her traduced and sublimated by rising, and then, dominant, patriarchical cultures and civilizations, but never totally suppressed. In familiar and unfamiliar myths, Goddess comes alive, pulsing with her own energy, irrepressible behind her many cultural masks. She can be the Universe itself, the source of all being, the holy Virgin, the Earth-Mother nurturer, the madly hysterical destroyer, the femme fatale, or the consort or mother of God. She is presented here not as myth, but as a true archetype, a potential being who exists in all of us, a force who long preceded her male counterpart as an appropriate metaphor for the Great Mystery of existence.

As compelling as any novel, Goddess is also a journey into the human heart. Observing Goddess over the centuries--worshipped, belittled, denied, rediscovered--we gain new insight into the changing role of women, our continuing development as a species, and our deepest concerns about ourselves, our world, and the human destiny.

From Library Journal
Popular and scholarly works on the prevalence of goddess figures and worship throughout history have exploded on the marketplace. These two works approach the existence of the worship of a female divine from different tacks. Both attempt to make comparisons among very different cultures. Biaggi's is an archaeological work, comparing the artifacts and tombs of Malta and the Orkneys and Shetlands. Because Malta is located in the Mediterranean and the Orkneys and Shetlands off the coast of Scotland, it would seem that any comparison would be an enormous leap of conjecture. But Biaggi leaves out the speculation, instead descriging the artifacts, grave goods, extant buildings, and other items in great detail, leaving out the speculation. The work is copiously illustrated. Well written with solid scholarship, it is recommended for libraries interested in goddess scholarship and archaeology. Leeming and Page call their study a biography of the goddess. Deliberately, they do not enter into gender politics but trace the change in the perceptions of goddesses by telling stories from various cultures, including African, Indian, Native American, Greek, Celtic, Christian, and the modern Gaia hypothesis. The goddess moves from her beginnings as a powerful earth creatrix to being fertility goddess to being kidnapped and abused to being divinity disguised. The stories are told in an accessible style. This multicultural collection is recommended for libraries interested in stories on goddesses.

Great little book
By Dr. James Gardner
This is a great little book that consists of a sequence of stories about the Goddess figure throughout history. Leeming and Page provide sparce though cogent introductions, occasional pictures, and then transcripts of the various Goddess tales. We are able to witness the transformation of the Goddess myths over time in a way that mere text could not provide.

One of the strengths of this book is its brevity, but that is also its chief deficit. Many of the tales are not properly identified, and there are no footnotes or notes of any kind. There is a brief selected bibliography and a short index. Perhaps a little more attention to cater to the needs of people with an academic interest would have made this a much stronger book, although as it stands it is well written, very interesting, and certainly informative.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the Goddess mythology, whether you are a beginning student or advanced scholar. Some of my own work has been in the area of early Christian history (see Jesus Who? and Mary Who? for my historical books on Jesus and Mary Magdalene) and I found new and useful information in Leeming and Page's little book.

The Bullfinch's Myhtology of the Female Divine
By A Customer
This book, and its companion, God, are excellent sources for all people who are exploring their spirituality, and even better for those that aren't. The authors present their brief introductions to the Goddess concept and let short retellings from world mythology supply their evidence, a system which both helps the book flow and makes the reader a more apt critic of the authors' interpretations of the myth. Granted, the retellings are short and the book's subject matter is too broad to be discussed in depth, but it presents its ideas of coherence and unity powerfully and respectfully, satisfying to both the mind and the soul. I recommend it wholeheartedly, especially if you are a Neopagan, this book makes an excellent outsiders' view of a subject dear to our hearts.
