About the Author
John C. Kotz is an emeritus State University of New York Distinguished Teaching Professor at the College at Oneonta. Educated at Washington and Lee University, as well as Cornell University, he held National Institutes of Health postdoctoral appointments at the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology in England and at Indiana University. Professor Kotz has co-authored three textbooks in several editions - INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, CHEMISTRY & CHEMICAL REACTIVITY, and THE CHEMICAL WORLD - along with the INTERACTIVE GENERAL CHEMISTRY CD-ROM. He also has published research on inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry. He was a Fulbright Lecturer and Research Scholar in Portugal in 1979 and a visiting professor there in 1992, as well as a visiting professor at the Institute for Chemical Education (University of Wisconsin, 1991-1992) and at Auckland University in New Zealand (1999). He also was an invited speaker at a meeting of the South African Chemical Society and at the biennial conference for secondary school chemistry teachers in New Zealand. In addition, a recent tenure as a mentor of the U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team, Professor Kotz has received numerous honors, including a State University of New York Chancellor's Award (1979), a National Catalyst Award for Excellence in Teaching (1992), the Estee Lectureship in Chemical Education at the University of South Dakota (1998), the Visiting Scientist Award from the Western Connecticut Section of the American Chemical Society (1999), and the first annual Distinguished Education Award from the Binghamton (New York) Section of the American Chemical Society (2001).

Paul M. Treichel, received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1962. After a year of postdoctoral study in London, he assumed a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as department chair from 1986 through 1995 and was awarded a Helfaer Professorship in 1996. He has held visiting faculty positions in South Africa (1975) and in Japan (1995). Retiring after 44 years as a faculty member in 2007, he is currently Emeritus Professor of Chemistry. During his faculty career he taught courses in general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and scientific ethics. Professor Treichel's research in organometallic and metal cluster chemistry and in mass spectrometry, aided by 75 graduate and undergraduate students, has led to more than 170 papers in scientific journals. John R. Townsend, Professor of Chemistry at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, completed his B.A. in Chemistry as well as the Approved Program for Teacher Certification in Chemistry at the University of Delaware. After a career teaching high school science and mathematics, he earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry at Cornell University, where he also received the DuPont Teaching Award for his work as a teaching assistant. After teaching at Bloomsburg University, he joined the faculty at West Chester University, where he coordinates the chemistry education program for prospective high school teachers and the general chemistry lecture program for science majors. He has been the university supervisor for more than 60 prospective high school chemistry teachers during their student teaching semester. David A. Treichel, Professor of Chemistry at Nebraska Wesleyan University, received a B.A. degree from Carleton College. He earned a M.S. and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Northwestern University. After post-doctoral research at the University of Texas in Austin, he joined the faculty at Nebraska Wesleyan University. if you are like me and do not like carrying around 1000 page ...

I'm not the only customer who has had issues with the online access aspect of this item and the publisher does an atrocious job of communicating what their packages for this book does and does not contain, so I thought I would lay it out in a review.

So here's the deal:

This textbook has two components: the actual textbook itself and an online component, where your teacher can create quizes and learning modules. In order to have access to the online component, you need to have an access code, which can only be used once. The online part of the textbook also includes the full textbook - you do not need a print copy. You will need internet access to read it though.

If you need online access for your class DO NOT BUY A USED BOOK. You will have to re-pay for an access code. Also, if you are like me and do not like carrying around 1000 page chemistry page books, DO NOT BUY this dual print/online edition - you can read the book online for the $100 fee. I bought this dual edition and then found out in my class that I didn't need the print edition so I tried returning it to amazon and You can also buy that directly from the publisher, instead of through amazon, and save some money. I tried returning my print edition, and amazon conveniently buried in the fine print the fact that they would charge me a $94 "restocking fee".

The best textbook I've ever read.

This is the perfect chemistry textbook, if there ever was one. I took Gen Chem 1 three years ago, so I purchased two other chem books in May and spent the summer reteaching myself all of Chem 1 to prepare for Chem 2 this Fall. This textbook was the one that my current Gen Chem 2 class required.

When I received it (after three months of using the other two), I was amazed at the difference in quality. Although I learned a lot with the first two, this book teaches everything in such a way that it's almost natural to understand chem. I struggled with chem so much three years ago, but now, I would have become a chem major if time + finances allowed it (I already have a degree and I'm now pre-med). Very happy with this textbook and hope that Kotz and co. continue making other books in the Chem series!

A pooetic guide to finding connection in a time of crisis

Haraway puts her unique blend of virtuosic wordplay and broad humanistic and scientific understanding into the service of helping us think about the contemporary state of the world in constructive ways. This is about not dismissing climate change and other huge threats because we can do nothing about them, and also not imagining we have the power to "fix" them, but embracing this moment because it is all that we have, and life is worth it. The constant repetitions of certain phrases and images can be irritating, until you see this as a sort of poem or performance piece that is trying to keep you in the present moment while connecting you to ideas, people, places, and especially species you had never felt kinship to before.

New stories for difficult times

Climate change and the onset of the Anthropocene, or Cthulucene as Haraway prefers to call it, calls for new ways of being and different stories to the ones we've been telling each other. Rather than an individualistic, capital M Man story, we need earthier, more entangled stories that will guide us in tough decisions about who lives and who dies, for whom we are and are not responsible in a finite world. This is a book about avoiding two mental places that are not helpful: denial on one hand or "game over" on the other. Instead, we need to stay with this trouble, and Haraway provides a lively philosophy for doing that.

Same book as "Rules of War' but from the hero's POV.

I thought this was part of a series, but it was actually the same story as 'Rules of War" only from John's POV. It was interesting to read his side of things, and the story is fun and extremely sexy, but just be aware it is the same story.

I would like to read more books in this setting, just a hint to the author!

Love the story, hate the price

While I hated to pay $3.99 for only 68 pages, I wanted to see how different the author made the story from the Hero's POV. It has been quite a while since I read Rules of War so it was like reading a new story for me even though I remembered some of the first book. I love the story and I only wish the author would make the stories ALOT longer!! Hopefully the author might do another book with the story of the 2 sisters but just make it longer, don't rush through the story!!

Kenneth N. Waltz is a recipient of the James Madison Award for distinguished scholarly contributions to political science from the American Political Science Association. He is Ford Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, and is now at the Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University. He is the author of Foreign Policy and Democratic Politics, Theory of International Politics, and coauthor of The Spread of Nuclear Weapons.

Still worth reading after all these years

This book has legs! I read it first in graduate school in 1969. I was impressed with the argument then, and still appreciate its power now. He identifies a key problem as (page 12) "identifying and achieving the conditions of peace. . ." He notes that, over time, three separate views have dominated discourse on the causes of war (and how to achieve peace): (a) human nature is the root cause; (b) the structure of states is the key factor; (c) the international system itself is the major variable.

The book proceeds in a linear fashion. First, he examines the variety of arguments locating the cause of war in human nature. However, he also notes that to link human nature to war is not easily done (there is, of course, much debate over exactly what human nature is--or even if there is such a given nature), and that political matters must be taken into account. As he considers the contributions of the behavioral sciences, he notes that (page 79) "The more fully behavioral scientists take account of politics, the more sensible and the more modest their efforts to contribute to peace become."

The second level of analysis is the structure of states themselves. He notes that some have argued that if the state had a proper structure, then peace would result. He considers, for instance, liberal theorists of the 19th century who made that point. One problem: While trying to create more liberal states, what about those illiberal ones who may engage in conflict? What then? The structure of the state won't prevent self-defense. Indeed, some liberals, like Thomas Paine, wanted to use force to democratize the world.

The final level of analysis is the structure of the international system itself. The main point here is that that system can be termed "anarchy." There is no central force to prevent outbreaks of violence. So, violence will occur. Interestingly, he begins the chapter on international anarchy with a quotation from Cicero (page 159) "For what can be done against force without force." States need to protect themselves when there is no mechanism to maintain peace; they will act in their national interest when threatened. The end result is the possibility of war whenever a country might be threatened. In Waltz' words (page 227): "According to the third image, there is a constant possibility of war in a world in which there are two or more states each seeking to promote a set of interests and having no agency upon which they can rely for protection."

In short, all three levels (images) must be understood. None is irrelevant. But the key to understanding war is the state of international anarchy. The book holds up well over time. It still presents a useful message, albeit from the hard-nosed realist position. Neocons won't like the argument that changing the structure of states won't make a lot of difference as long as there is international anarchy. Anyhow, for those interested in a fairly hard-headed analysis, this book still serves a useful purpose.

still the best intro to the levels of analysis issue in IR

IR scholars has long debated on which level of analysis is the most appropriate and helpful level in approaching international relations. In his seminal book Man, the State, and War, Kenneth N. Waltz becomes the first to analyze the political philosophy behind each level of analysis and their interaction with one another. Unlike his later writings in which he develops a purely structural theory of international relations, in Man, the State, and War Waltz offers a more balanced view on the importance of each "images" for the study of world politics: "the `third image' describes the framework of world politics, but without the first of and second images there can be no knowledge of the forces that determine policy," (238).
To briefly summarize Waltz's images, the "first image" is about human nature. Human-nature accounts explain war by analyzing the common characteristics (or defects) of human beings. These theories tend to attribute war to an "ultimate cause" that derives from human nature: "the root of all evil is man, and thus he is himself the root of the specific evil, war," (3). Waltz's problem with searching for an "ultimate cause," however, is that ultimate causes frequently turn out to be the cause of everything. Therefore, Waltz criticized theories that explain war through human nature by arguing that human nature is the cause of as many good (and benign) things as evil ones (39).
The "second image" is about the characteristics of states: "the idea that defects in states cause wars among them," (83). Waltz analyzes several state-level accounts of war and peace some of which are very fashionable today, such as the peaceful nature of democracies and peaceful impact of free trade. The notion here is similar to the first image, if "bad" states (such as non-democratic or interventionist) can be erased then there will be no war (119). However, Waltz notes that there is no guarantee that good states will not revert to war. Waltz rejects state-level theories that would rely "on the generalization of one pattern of state and society to bring peace to the world," (122).
The "third image" is the international system. The absence of a world government renders the international system an anarchical one; and "in anarchy there is automatic harmony," (160). Thus, wars occur "because there is nothing to prevent them," (232). Waltz tends to view third image as the most important account of war among nations. Yet unlike in his later theorizing, he underlines the importance of the other two images: "we still have to look to motivation and circumstance in order to explain individual acts," (231). Hence, multiple levels of analysis.
My personal view on the levels of analysis question is that among the three different levels from which IR scholars approached to the study of conflict among states, state-level approach has been the most productive and helpful in terms of accounting for the conflict among states and providing us clues as to how to reduce or manage them. Thus, I do not share Waltz's inclination to the third image in Man, the State, and War. Yet in the final analysis, any single level is incomplete by itself. Waltz's Man, the State, and War is important for being the first to analyze the philosophical foundations of each levels of analysis and to argue the complementary relationship among them. "The real problem of IR scholars," Lipson observed, is "to integrate choice and structure," (1884, p. 20). And a successful integration of choice and structure inevitably requires making use of systemic as well as state-level theories. Indeed, this is the current trend in both theoretical approaches (Moravcsik 1997; Gilpin 2001) to and empirical analyses (Huth 1996) of international relations.

I have literally not yet read a book more thoroughly boring and abstract. It took me several tries to even get past the first page. I'm guessing it's important to someone or something since the professor assigned it but I have read theoretical physics books that were more engaging and easier to follow.
