A beautifully written book of stories by those who have lived through the heartbreak of addiction and yet find, in their hearts, incredible compassion and love. These stories of parents of addicts, children of addicts and the overwhelming love that brings them all together will leave you in tears. I could not put this book down, it was worth every moment I spent reading it.

What Is Remembered Lives

Sadly, I bought this book upon receiving the news that a friend's teenage daughter had been diagnosed with an incurable fatal illness. As one who came to Paganism by my own choice, I had no reference yet for how Pagans dealt with end of life passage.

It turns out it was that very reason that Starhawk and other members of Reclaiming wrote this book. Very few modern Pagans are raised in their chosen spirituality and often find they have no traditions or practices to guide them when dealing with the loss of a loved one.

This book is not a strict step-by-step ritual guide, but a sharing of experience that includes blessings, prayers and ritual details. The collected writings share how various people have dealt with the situations around long illness as well as sudden losses. There are accounts and suggestions for rituals not only to say farewell or bury the dead, but for how those still alive can honor those who have died and address their own grieving and healing.

I found the stories shared in this book to be incredibly personal and yet at the same time practical. I feel I will have a foundation of knowledge from which to draw when I have to deal with this issues and changes in my own family and circle of friends.

Will use it again and again.

I can't say enough good about this book. Thank the goddess there is a book from a Pagan perspective. That celebrates the diversity of pagan belief and addresses loss and death. From how to help children deal with the loss of a loved one (bird or teacher or...) to how to conduct a home-made cremation to mourning rituals and healing songs to advice for being with a loved one who is dying. My only complaint is that it isn't long enough. Deep enough. Hopefully it is only the first volume of future books...

Promising First Novel and a Good Read--Not All The Way There

In this promising first novel, Linda Yablonsky paints a humorous, off-beat picture of New York's elite drug culture in the 1980s. The narrator/protagonist is adrift in a world in which who you hang out with matters more than how much money you make. A would-be writer, she's an aimless thirty year old druggie who works as cook in a chic downtown restaurant. Her natural hipness makes her a favorite of the "in" crowd and gradually she's drawn to the glamour of an aristocracy which, as a middle class Jewish girl from the burbs, doesn't reflect what is familiar to her. Adopting the vices of the elite, she finds a role she can cop--drug dealer to artists, models and entrepreneurs. Spurred on by her reckless girlfriend, a marvelous rockster named "Kit" whose helpless charm and deviant life style are brought vividly to life by Yablonsky, she is soon buying and selling heroin for them. An endless stream of people herd in and out of their apartment, and she observes everything that goes down with the deadpan humor of a cynic and the naive detachment of someone who has nothing to lose. Her anxiety increases as she places herself further and further at risk, betraying the tough veneer she presents to the world. Surprisingly, when she gets busted her life calms down--the crisis enables her to acknowlege a number of issues she's been avoiding since her arrival in New York: her total lack of identity and her desire to become a writer. At this juncture, Yablonsky attempts to take on bigger issues to do with drug addiction and destructive behavior and,in my opinion, she takes a wrong turn. She struggles to link the character's pathology with the history of the Holocaust and her heritage as a descendant of survivors, for example. It doesn't come across and a strict editor would have told Yablonsky not to go there.
At the end of the story, she is stunned and confused, but has managed to change the imprisoning architecture of her life--no small feat for a human being, and a huge task for a novel to make both authentic and interesting. It's enough in a first novel (and an autobiographical work) to describe the transformation the character goes through and acknowledge the issues raised as a result of the character's experience. Neither Yablonsky nor her narrator need to know all the answers, but one of them should ask the right questions--and then leave it at that. Since the book is based on personal experience, it's possible Yablonsky rushed it to completion--who can afford to wait a decade or two to digest life's experience?
The author's eye for detail and ironic sense of pathos make for a tale which is both exotic and urbane. Despite her immersion in a chaotic, intense world, there's a soundness to the narrator's voice which inspires trust in the reader. As an outsider, she's adopted a New Yorker's consistently sarcastic, humorous attitude but, in contrast, has an underlying helplessness and sincerity which suggests she is more of a human being than she likes to admit. I liked her character a lot and look forward to more novels by Yablonsky in the future--a second is long overdue!

Down the Junk Road And Back

This book chronicles the "life cycle" of the junkie, in which one goes from the "heroin honeymoon" period, to the ultimate devastation. It rates right up there among my favorite junkie novels, after Permanent Midnight, and Trainspotting. I'm an ex-heroin addict, and while I never was a dealer, made deals with the DEA, or suggled drugs in from the Golden Triangle, as the protagonist in this book does, Yablonsky's narrative rings very true.

Honest and extremely interesting - I couldn't stop reading!

I recommend this novel -- it's very interesting. I know people who are caught up in drugs and are not evil people. For some, it's not about "just say no" or "just walk away" - and the author makes that clear. This book made me realize that junkies can and want to see the light at the end of the tunnel but find it so hard to get there. Or sometimes can't get there, not yet. I was very interested to find out what was going to happen to these folks and I laughed but I also felt very sad for them. At first, drugs do make you feel good, no doubt, and the writer is honest about this. Using drugs is fun at first - a lot of fun. But then you go down, and you stay down for a long, long time (physcially, mentally, financially, etc.) This book told a story that a lot of people will find hard to understand. I thought Linda Yablonsky did a great job at telling a true story. Buy it, you won't regret it.

A True Classic

The entire “I Bring Fire Series” is a true classic ending with Ragnarok. This book from the series pulls together all of the pieces of a great story merging the classic myths with urban fantasy. It is crafted in a way that keeps you reading and even going back to re-read the series.

The trinity has always been an important part of mythology and religion. It is found everywhere and changes with the times. New religions took trinities from paganism and changed it to fit their view. Ms. Grockel is doing exactly the same thing in this series and you find out exactly who the new trinity is in Ragnarok. Even though you think you know, what you don’t know is how they changed in the new worldview.

You will love in love with the characters of Bodhi and Amy especially. They are trying to find their way in the craziest situations. I love how they discover who they are and how they will continue in their new world. I enjoy the humor that is embedded in the story, especially from Bodhi. He has a rare gift of saying things that often makes you laugh or at the very least, smile.

Ragnarok answers the questions set out in the previous books and the answers are not what you thought or expected. You see how loyalty, friendship, love, truth, and family call come together. Even though this part does have a suitable ending, there is still a lot of stories that can be told. I would love to see Ms. Grockel come back to this and continue with Bodhi, Amy, Claire, Fenrir and others. There is a lot of fun adventures that they could go on.

Epic Ending for an Epic Series

This series has had highs and lows for me (really, I hesitate to use "lows" because emotional lows and sometimes necessary pacing changes aren't quality lows, just a difference in experiencing the story). This book, however, was high after high. The author really got to use all her colors to paint an expansive picture by letting us in on all the secrets. All the hints and teases, all the reveals are vastly satisfying.

This book is large as the team moves from location to location, but the pace never lagged. I personally enjoyed that the majority of the book didn't hop from group to group, but instead we benefited from different perspectives within the main group.

Gockel was saving up some SERIOUS feels for this final book and, boy, do they pack a punch. A really, very satisfying punch. Be prepared to say goodbye to some series staples, but for a book about the end of the world, the author handles the goodbyes well. Senseless deaths spurn on our team and heroic deaths do the same. Oodles of fuel leading up to some serious destruction at the end. While the book ends with our plot threads tied up neatly (well, as neatly as things can be using Chaos as a thread), Gockel offers a bonus epilogue for her mailing list slated to come out a month from Ragnarok's release!

To my mind, this was the best of the series as we get to see a lot of growth and revelations happen for our main characters (and even secondary characters). I have read this series 3 times now and will continue to keep it handy. This series deserves to have a favored place for those who love a good fiction story with epic flair and deep characterization...and an appreciation for the irreverent :) this is Chaos we're dealing with, after all.

Absolutely fantastic!

Truly an amazing journey. I've read this series from beginning to end, just finishing the sixth and final book, and I swear, I wanted to cry at the end, because I've become so invested in these characters and in their stories. Just beautifully written, hugely imaginative, and emotionally powerful. I think the part that did and continue to touch me the most were the flashback's to Loki and his relationships with his children, and the deep love he had for them. And perhaps the moment that most touched me in this final installment was Amy experiencing Loki's memory of running away after being taunted by the other children, and Odin coming to find him. Man, it nearly brought me to tears.

This series really has just felt so complete. The detail and the level of continuity and connection, running from the very first book, right up until the very end, blew my mind. That there were clues and hints and evidence of where this was heading from the very start is just astonishing to me, and shows such an incredible level of dedication and commitment on C. Gockel's part to these character's and this world. I've never really seen the character of Loki, and what he represent's, the importance of chaos and destruction in the balance of the universe, done greater justice. It was fascinating, and moving, and emotional and gripping, and everything in between. I absolutely adored it, and I would recommend this series to anyone who loves the character of Loki, and just the themes presented through the series in general, in a flash. My heartfelt gratitude and thanks to C. Gockel for sharing this epic tale, for having the intelligence and talent and creativity, as well as the dedication and care to write and finish such an astonishing piece of work. I can't even fathom accomplishing something so immense and extensive. I've enjoyed it hugely. And now I'm off to go read her "short stories" book she put out. Thank you Ms. Gockel! Thank you so much! And I hope that someday, you'll revisit Loki as a character, and take us all on some new adventures with him!

Gitanjali (Bengali: গীতাঞ্জলি) is a collection of poems by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. The original Bengali collection of 157 poems was published on August 14, 1910. The English Gitanjali or Song Offerings is a collection of 103 English poems of Tagore's own English translations of his Bengali poems first published in November 1912 by the India Society of London. It contained translations of 53 poems from the original Bengali Gitanjali, as well as 50 other poems which were from his drama Achalayatan and eight other books of poetry — mainly Gitimalya (17 poems), Naivedya (15 poems) and Kheya (11 poems).

Songs of Kabir is a 1915 book consisting of 100 poems of Kabir, the 15th-century Indian poet and mystic, translated to English by Rabindranath Tagore. In this book Kabir has combined the philosophies of Sufism and Hinduism. The book had an introduction by Evelyn Underhill and was published by Macmillan, New York. This book has been translated to Persian and Kurdish by Leila Farjami and Sayed Madeh Piryonesi, respectively.

New English translations of Songs of Kabir is done by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra ."It is Mehrotra who has succeeded in capturing the ferocity and improvisational energy of Kabir’s poetry".

The translations were often radical, leaving out or altering large chunks of the poem and in one instance fusing two separate poems (song 95, which unifies songs 89,90 of Naivedya). The translations were undertaken prior to a visit to England in 1912, where the poems were extremely well received. In 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English Gitanjali.

The English Gitanjali became very famous in the West, and was widely translated.[3] The word gitanjali is composed from "gita", song, and "anjali", offering, and thus means – "An offering of songs"; but the word for offering, anjali, has a strong devotional connotation, so the title may also be interpreted as "prayer offering of song".
