Time enhances the purposes of this book

This review is of the basic SPENCERIAN PENMANSHIP book, theory not practice (i.e., nobody writes in this book). Time has enhanced the many reasons one might wish to own it, particularly: (1) self-teaching; (2) home-schooling; and even (3) Americana/nostalgia. By today's decaying standards the instruction in it is unyielding, even severe, especially as to posture and flourish; yet the fact that the contents are well over a hundred years old gives it a certain nostalgic, even somewhat campy, cachet. It's also surprisingly cheap! If used as instructed, it will work, and will provide a hand that's a little more elaborate than the revered Palmer Method, verging on copperplate calligraphy. While a "dip pen" is no longer required, for best results use a fountain pen with a little bit of "give" in the tip. It is best used in conjunction with the workbooks: Spencerian Copybooks 1-5, Set, without Theory Book (Spencerian Penmanship), sold and reviewed separately. Curiously, it is possible to buy this book and the five copybooks as one item, but as of now that costs a good deal more.

A nostalgic andsomewhat bizarre visit to the not-so-distant past.

Platt Rogers Spencer, the developer of the Spencerian method of penmanship in 1840, published this short book about the "theory of proper penmanship" in 1870, along with five Copybooks, making his teaching method the gold standard for handwriting instruction in the late 19th Century.

It is almost unimaginable for us in the 21st Century, but there was a time not that very long ago when there were no computers, no typewriters, and all banking and bookkeeping records were done by hand. Poor handwriting could be disastrous: a misplaced space in a will could mean that instead of receiving "tobacco, two hogsheads" (loosely 2,000 pounds of leaf tobacco, and quite valuable), the nephew of a deceased Southern gentleman might receive "tobacco, two hogs heads", which might be a single pouch of tobacco and two cheeses made with the heads of pigs (far less than valuable). Handwriting was important.

Under Spencer, it was also quite regimented. The theory book describes how writing classes for boys and young men should be implemented (women couldn't work as bank clerks or secretaries yet). From the beginning, the class was as regimented as Marine Corps boot camp. While there are four positions "allowed" for sitting at the desk-- Left-side, Front, Right-oblique, and Right-side-- the author insists that the class should all maintain the same, uniform position (note: there's no more allowance for left-handers than for women, although at least left-handers could learn to write with the non-dominant hand!). Everyone was told to sit the same way, "easily upright, and keep the shoulders square", to avoid becoming "hollow-chested or round-shouldered". Then, on the instructor's commands, they would "open copybooks", "open inkwells", and "dip pens", all in synchronization.

Individual letters were broken down into their components-- students were taught to respond to questions such as "What do you call an angle of 7 degrees greater than 45 degrees?", and had to be able to be able to identify multiple points and angles of a circular diagram, with a special emphasis on "What is the slant of 52 degrees in the Spencerian writing called? The Main Slant. Why is it so called? Because it is the slant given to most of the main or downward strokes."

It was also too complex to last. In 1894, Austin Palmer published his "Palmer's Guide to Business Writing", which was a much simplified variation on the laborious and slow (though beautiful) Spencerian method. It supplanted Spencer's completely in short order, and was taught in American schools not only as handwriting but as a means of instilling discipline in young minds. It required too much manual dexterity for young children, though, so in the 1950s children began learning to use manuscript (block) letters in first grade and to write connected letters using the Zaner-Bloser method in third and fourth grade (usually just referred to as "print" and "cursive"). Zaner-Bloser was yet another simplification of the Spencerian method, and users of the one can usually read the other without difficulty.

And then along came computers. Now, many schools no longer teach handwriting beyond the manuscript-style printing kids learn in first grade and from Sesame Street-- why bother, when no one writes by hand anymore?

The Spencerian Penmanship Theory Book is a glimpse at an earlier world, and a proof that not all progress is completely positive. Handwriting could once be far more beautiful than a text on the smartphone's screen.

Program works!

I got three sets of this. While the style is a little frilly, it certainly takes the student through each step in a logical way. My kids have done very well with it and have even gotten several compliments on their handwriting.

Riveting Arthurian retelling!

I have searched and searched for a great Arthurian retelling and have been disappointed with the ones I have ventured into reading. I was somewhat skeptical when I picked up Nancy McKenzie's Queen of Camelot. This two-novels-in-one compilation is based on Guenevere, from her point of view, in first person narrative, and is 623 pages long in very small print. I didn't want to waste my time reading something this big only to be disappointed at the end. I nevertheless gave the book a whirl. Glad I did! This is one of the most compelling and beautifully told retells I have ever read! McKenzie gives us a detailed story about Guenevere from her point of view. She tells us about the prophecy on the day she was born, how she spends her childhood as an adventurous tomboy, how people fear her and treat her differently as she grows up, how the knights around her battle with the Saxons, and how all of the prophecies come true. She meets Arthur, marries him and later has a love affair with Lancelot, something based on the original tale. But the novel has so much more than that. You will see how this story of magic, prophecies, love and betrayal transpires in an altered, detailed and beautiful light. There are many twists throughout the novel.

Guenevere is developed in such an abundant, three-dimensional way in this novel. She is no longer just the pagan beauty who marries a Christian, betrays him and destroys all of Camelot as a result. She is a complex character with flaws as well as virtues in this offering. Arthur is also written in a more interesting, compelling way here, but it is Lancelot that once again blows me away. I have always romanticized Sir Lancelot and McKenzie does not disappoint me in her version of the loyal, chivalrous knight. Merlin and Morgan Le Fay are written with much complexity and nuance as well. This novel, however, does not focus so much on the love triangle between Guenevere, Arthur and Lancelot as much as her inability to supply an heir for Arthur and her affection for Arthur's bastard son, the traitorous Mordred. The overall story is magnificent. Once again, I say that McKenzie did a wonderful job bringing Guenevere to life. She turns this character into a strong, intelligent, complex, three-dimensional, flesh and blood woman, someone you will feel a great deal of affinity with. She is not portrayed as a simple-minded, traitorous hussy in this one! I loved the fanciful storytelling style that made me turn the pages until the wee hours of the night. Some of my friends who read the book along with me complained about it being too long-winded. I didn't think it was long-winded at all. In fact, I wish it had been longer. I loved this book and I look forward to giving Grail Prince a whirl.

Keeps you thinking and wondering...

Although it does not correctly correspond to the true tale of King Arthur (so says my boyfriend according to the book "The Once and Future King"), I, too, greatly enjoyed this bittersweet book depicting the great legend of Camelot, King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and others. I loved the attention Ms. McKenzie put to the details of everything she wrote about. There were times that I wished the book would go faster but it kept my interest enough to be finished within three days. At the end, I mourned at the characters' fate and I wished that somehow they were real and I could change the way things ended. Nonetheless, it is a truly memorable book, though I don't think I can read the book again because it is too painful to fall in love with the characters and then bear their fate again..

The VERY BEST interview book on the market

I am a librarian and have looked at A LOT of interview books. The Best Answers to the 201 Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions is always my hands-down go-to book for interviewers. I have used it numerous times to prepare for interviews, and when I use it, I am always very prepared and confident for any question interview committees may ask. I am on my second personal copy, and have purchased more copies for my library and for my library student workers that are graduating. It not only lists the questions and covers how you should approach answering it, but it also has reflection worksheets to identify what you like in a position, what you are looking for, how you would describe yourself, and forces you to think about situations you've worked with people, what traits you value and dislike in others, etc. So even if the interview question is different than one in the book, you can call upon what you've already reviewed to answer it. It's a sad fact that most interviewers don't really have a clue about what is or is not an effective interview question or style of interviewing. This book is a valuable reference for anyone who is even remotely in the job market as it gives you pleasant and effective answers to both the pointless questions interviewers love to ask to fill time as well as the good ones.

I purchased this book many years ago and just purchased the Kindle version. I still have my paperback but I'm always lending it out to friends. I have been told that I am the best at interviewing. I have to credit this book. You will not be disappointed. My best advice is to write your own answers out and practice them over and over. This book really teaches you how to respond.
