Laptops--call them notebooks, portable computers, or whatever else you like--are tightly engineered items. It's hard to get all the required components to obey stringent performance and power-management requirements, and still fit into a small case. The job usually requires a custom motherboard and other specialized components, and so the laptop owner who wants to upgrade his or her machine faces a much more difficult task than the owner of a desktop machine with a similar wish. One can swap out the hard drive, add more RAM, and make tweaks in software, but almost everything else requires the addition of external components, which kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop. That's the message the reader takes away from Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. It's not Mueller's fault that such computers are hard to do much with, and that your best upgrade procedure is often a visit to an auction site.

That said, Mueller does a great job of explaining how laptops work--how the engineers went about cramming all those heat-generating components into those miniature chassis in the first place. He also explains a lot of interesting component theory, such as how magnetic hard drives store data and how various DVD standards differ. The information makes for good reading, and comes in handy when you're shopping. He also demonstrates his skill--long well-reputed among builders and repairers of desktop machines--in teaching diagnostics. He explains, for example, how to test a laptop power supply, and why you should consider it a prime suspect in a malfunctioning computer even if the LEDs come on and the cooling fan spins. WHAT USER MANUAL TO USE ...?

I bought this book several years ago (I bought also the two more recent version of Upgrading and repairing PC) I repaired my old Lenovo notebook with windows vista, nevertheless, I learned a lot from the Scott Mueller books, other publication help me more, to replace the HDD, install Windows 7 and upgrade the Memory in my Lenovo. (The small book " The Healthy PC" has in few pages everything I needed to Know.) The reason for what I decided to write this review is to advise the readers about the "Manufacturer User Manual", in my case The Manual provided by the site Lenovo USA is useless (A complete chapter of "Repair Tools" is missing) they want you sent your Laptop to them.) The site Levovo Global had a Manual with a Chapter of tools to replace the HDD and upgrade the Memory.

Very Little Laptop Specific Information

I bought this book hoping it would help with laptop diagnosis and disassembly. I was very disappointed. There is almost nothing laptop-specific in this book, and it does not cover some very common laptop problems. A lot of laptops I work on have video problems that are usually caused by a bad LCD screen, bad inverter, or bad motherboard. There is absolutely nothing in this book that helps diagnose which it could be, nor is there any info for disassembly of those parts. There is also very little info for major laptop disassembly.

Overall, I would not recommend this book unless you are looking for an in-depth description of how various hardware components work. There is very little in this book that applies only to laptops, and there is very little diagnostic help with laptop-specific problems.

Good reference and interesting as all of Scott's writing, but woefully short on upgrading. I had hoped for more on ugrading possibilities for CPU and memory, but have actually found more information online and on blogs than was in the book. Not as useful as his desktop upgrade series which I really used.

Dragoneers Cycle One

I read a lot, and I love fantasy books so was very happy when I came across this compendium of books all put together. Unfortunately they didn't last as long as I'd hoped because I couldn't put them down!

I loved the characters, each with their own struggles, the battles are dramatic and full of heroic sacrifices; how can they fail to be awesome when it's dragons that are fighting! I felt genuine fear for the characters when they went into combat, which is testament to the way they are written as believable people. Its all set in a rich and fabulous fantasy world, full of marvelous creatures that the author really brings to life.

Great bit of dramatic fantasy.

This is a pretty solid fantasy series

This is a pretty solid fantasy series, and I actually found myself immersed in the character development. I really didn't know what to expect when I purchased it here on Amazon. I was bored, cold, and in the mood for some sci-fi. It turns out I stumbled upon a really good series of books. The second book in the series is by far my favorite, but I would strongly recommend all of them. It's loaded with everything mythological, and it's difficult to put down after you have started reading. I got through it in just days. Mr. Mathias has fantasy fiction down to a science.

A fantastic read!

Another reviewer used the word epic, and I concur! This epic adventure in a fantastical land was just what I was looking for, like a breath of fresh air.

I loved the characters and the world they live in, their interactions with each other and the dangers they face. The action scenes were intense and vivid.

I was literally glued to my kindle while reading this series! I really like that it's a box set all-in-one so when I was finished with one book I able to continue on without interruption. Although that was almost a curse because I had no excuse to put it down!

I would highly recommend these books to anyone who is a fan of fantasy and dragons, you will not be disappointed!

Great for All Feared by the Wealthy

It is very much text literature of the Roosevelt administration. Great policies which should be reconsidered for today's modern economic woes. Workers rights are and have been an major issue for years now, mostly unresolved. and inadequate. Good work though it could have been more subjective or less.

Boring and superficial

For anybody interested in the great depression, this book will come as a disappointment. Its really more of a textbook, written in English at about a 10th grade level. Nothing thrilling in this tome, more or less a superficial catalog of some selective items from the Roosevelt Administration and a collection of speeches. Dull.

From the Foreword: Some things are so obvious they elude our scrutiny. The act of breathing, for example, is so automatic, and the air we breathe so invisible, that we tend to overlook them until some respiratory crisis brings them to our attention. It can be the same with our understanding of the Bible. Especially amongst evangelicals, whose high view of Biblical authority can lead to proof-texting, it is easy to get caught up in the minutiae and forget to stand back and look at the larger picture, what John Wesley called "the whole scope and tenor of Scripture." Thus Christians can be filled with details about Biblical teaching, but fail to comprehend those over-arching themes which place these details in perspective. This situation can lead to serious misinterpretation of Biblical doctrine.

What, after all, is the purpose of the Bible as a whole? What motivated its appearance within the religious community we call Israel, and the new Israel of the church of Jesus Christ? Scripture came into being as an expression of the relationship between God and His people, a relationship which the Bible typically portrays in terms of the covenant or its equivalents: the kingdom of God, the family of God, new life through membership in the Son of God. Although the Bible may focus on a variety of issues and concerns, all of these have their meaning within the ebb and flow of the covenant relationship between the Lord and those who have pledged their loyalty to Him in worship and obedience. In this sense, covenant is the air which Scripture breathes; it supplies the framework and the thematic material for understanding all parts of the Old and New Testaments.

The present volume draws upon earlier studies, but takes the further step of applying the concept of the covenant to the Bible as a whole, both Old and New Testaments, not just historically but in a thematic and theological way. The result is a frequently amazing clarification of the meaning of Scripture in whole and in part. Not only the Old Testament Law, but also prophecy, psalm, New Testament epistle and the Gospel declarations of Christ take on a fresh impact when viewed as expressions of covenant-related motifs. It is perhaps not going too far to suggest that the thoughtful reader, interacting with the material presented in this study, should be led to a complete and radically Biblical rethinking of the meaning of Christian faith, both historically and in a contemporary context.

Excellent Book For Understanding Covenant

In I Will Be Their God, J. E. Leonard shows how the entire Bible is written from the perspective of covenant. Covenant is the "air" that the Bible breathes: a basic understanding of how covenant works is assumed in it's stories just as air is assumed in any story about living people. In a day when covenant is so little understood, this book is a must read to properly understand the context in which the Scriptures were written. It is reader friendly but filled with profound insights in understanding the concept of covenant.
Leonard takes archeological finds to show how the concept of covenant was the way people thought for thousands of years, especially in the years in which the Bible was written. With this understanding, it is easy to see how the stories of the Bible - Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus - are all about God's covenant with His chosen people. This ultimately affects how we interpret "end time" books of the Bible such as Revelation.
The Bible sure makes a lot more sense when understood from this perspective.

Create your own SIP-based Softphone

This book helped me passed my Convergence+ and Security+ exam.

On with the quick review:

This is a must-have book for network engineers dedicated to improving their craft in IP Multimedia Communication, specifically working on SIP-based Softphones. This book has taught a non-programmer like me to deconstruct and analyze the internals of a Softphone, i.e the most famous Counterpath X-Ten Lite Softphone. Being a security guy, the chapter for Securing Multimedia Communications is an excellent introduction as well on how to implement SIP-VoIP Security starting from the network layer, the transport layer all the way to the application layer.

Obviously Rogelio's experience in the field is as wide as you can imagine which he was able to effectively discuss and present in this book in my humble opinion.

Note:

I am still using this book as reference on my desk when I deal with customers who would liked to integrate their sofphones or CRM with our proprietary predictive dialer.

The Best SIP book yet

I have read a lot of VoIP books, I have even taken and past the CCNA Voice Certification prior to getting this book. This book has introduced and explained many things I never even heard about VoIP and SIP. Great book, would recommend to anyone that is trying to better understand SIP or wanting to learn how to program SIP applications. I haven't done the programming part yet, but I have read through the book and loved all the information I learned from it.
Bottom line, a must have.

Deep knowledge presented in an amenable, down to earth way

Rogelio's mastery on the subject is pretty evident and aligned with my expectations when I got a book from this series. What makes his work differential is the approach he choses: practical, no nonsense, down to earth and the evidence that the author writes from first hand experience in real conditions (no R&D labs projects here).

A must.

Good Practice Book, particularly on I, IV, V Blues Progression

Good guitar book. Examples are in the advanced beginner/intermediate level. Presented are various licks over a full I, IV, V progression. Various styles of artists and numerous keys and modes are used. For example, as an "encyclopedia", you could investigate licks over the IV chord in a particular key you're working on, and compare the styles of various artists on how they would likely handle it. The underlying approach is to provide useful lick examples in Minor, Major, Mixolydian, etc. modes in various keys and various styles, all the while referencing the I, IV, V progressions. There's a lot here to learn from, and altogether, very good.
The CDR is good reinforcement, and the playing is sharp and professional, but doesn't overwhelm the student.

Good book but when it arrived there was no cd included. Other than that may not be the best lick book out there but it gets the job done.

So lame... so non-blues.... so very weak...

I'll be honest from the start: I'm not fond of learning "licks" in and of themselves. It's sort of like reading only certain lines of great poems, but skipping the rest of the poem. Taken out of context these short licks mean very little, even when they are given a context (such as "Chicago Blues, lick played over V of I-IV-V progression in key of A") The problem is that these phrases, taken out of context of the entire solo or the full song, lack any context. It's like reading only certain lines from "Hamlet" and trying to understand it - it's not going to happen and it's a terrible way to learn to play. So from the start this book and others like it are doomed to fail, in my opinion. Having said that I do have some blues "licks" books that I don't mind so much. This is NOT one of them. It's hard to know where to start with criticizing this book - there's so much crap to complain about. Let's start with the licks themselves: they claim to be in the "style" of a particular blues genre and within that in the style of a blues guitarist who plays in that style. So for example we have a "Chicago Blues" section which has some licks by Buddy Guy, to name one. This is a great idea, if it worked in the least bit. But these "licks" are tame, lame and dead on arrival. They're terrible examples of blues licks. They have no character, no identity, no zest, no zeal, no nothing at all... they're just really weak examples of generic blues licks. And this brings us to the recorded examples on the accompanying CD. These are truly awful. I mean they are so far removed from the blues that it makes me think Wayne Riker has absolutely no clue as to how to play the blues. The sample licks are flaccid and dull; lifeless and stillborn. They are perfect examples of how NOT to play the blues. They are void of any emotional or expressive content at all. They're just... horrible. Uninspired and lifeless. A true waste of time. They give you zero idea as to how the *real* blues men would have played these licks. They are weakly recorded, tepidly played and totally lifeless. Awful. YOU WILL NOT LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE BLUES FROM THIS BOOK. It's pretty much that simple. Don't waste your time with this crap. It's awful. A tepid, stillborn collection of flaccid, tame "licks" that don't inspire you to pursue real blues. They're everything the blues were NOT meant to be. Do not buy this book. It's truly awful.
