Truth and Beauty

(Full Disclosure: I am a graduate of the University of South Florida's English: Creative Writing undergraduate program and Katherine Riegel was one of my professors, from whom I have taken one course (Intro to Poetry) and from whom I would have taken many more, had the slots not filled up like lines for registers on Black Friday. I like her, she's a nice person. I also took classes from her husband, Ira Sukrungruang, who is also a nice person, and one hell of a disc golfer. Know, however, that as much as I like someone, I am not afraid to savage the things that they do or make. Not that I plan to do so, as I was enthralled and enraptured by this work, but you know, honesty and all. That said, let us begin.)

It's a poetry collection, but it isn't. These pages drip with honeyed truth, with lines that ache in reflection and refraction, with memory through thick stained glass. There is more than creation here, more than whim, more than words made wonderful through selection and style. There is truth here. I can't just call it poetry. It is, to co-opt a term, poetic non-fiction.

From the earliest memories of failure in "Art" to the ones that have yet to be remembered in "After Both My Parents Are Dead," the poems of Castaway go beyond the dichotomy of truth and beauty to turn a life lived into a scattering of polished gems. They bear their cracks and weatherings, they resemble the pressures under which they were formed, but they come out shining and beautiful. There are rhythms here that one hears only in the afterglow, in the reflection of memory upon which one gazes in the quiet moments, after the dust has all settled. These poems kick up the dust, throw open the windows, spread a new light across old memories.

Many of the poems deal in memories of the Midwest, of the long flat plane of Illinois, and a childhood spent there. There is a conception of late that between the coastlines is a fly-over country, a vast expanse between points of interest. It is so oft forgot that these places between the seas are home to the same trials, the same joys and the same sorrows, that one finds in any other place, but that in these spaces in the middle, one can still see the sky light upon the soil, see the sun setting between the branches and dip behind those amber waves of grain. This is sail-over country, with winds that whip and wail, people tossing in the storms. The poetry of Castaway is the poetry of the great land-sea between the borders, of rurality and the people that grow between the fields and the forests of America.

The other overriding theme threaded throughout this collection is one of family and the ways in which families become not what one imagines them to be, or wishes them to be, but what they will be. There is absence here, and longing, staring at the edges of a thing torn apart, not at the seams but at the heart. And yet, there is also joy in these words, and balm, for though family can change by proximity, it still holds itself together within us, a layer of our conception of self.

To pick out favorites is to place some memories before others, when all are part of the parcel. And yet I will attempt to do so, if only to let their example speak to the wonder of the whole. "My Father in Illinois" displays the speaker's difficulty understanding why one place is not as good as another, why the grass looks so much greener in a place away from home.

"I want to know/how he could not love/this farm, this barn/with its good strong wood/that he precisely cut and nailed,/the beams and rafters becoming the frame of the ship I sail in dreams/ever after."

This land between the seas is a multivaried place, a collection of names with different faces, that speak to us, each to each. And yet though one has ties to family, another has ties to memory, and the rope pulls so taut sometimes that it cannot help but fray, leaving us standing, holding onto broken ends.

And, because I promised joy, a joyful poem: "After Watching A Colin Firth Movie, I Think About Quantum Mechanics."

In this piece, there is the blending of the self and the selves, those other people who live our lives just like we do, but make the little different choices that we're faced with every day. It acknowledges the what ifs and what could have beens, through the theory (a personal obsession of mine) of many worlds, of the ever branching of the present, with lines to different futures for different choices that we've made.

"I would like to explain/how I do things without consciousness, the way,/driving, I find myself home with no memory/of any turns, or, after a stop sign, wondering/if I did actually stop, or just blew through/oblivious, lucky no other drivers/moved temporarily through worlds where they/had no stop sign, worlds where our straight roads/turn on themselves, where voices call out/to negate our silences, and kisses/tumble from the sky like ripe plums,/sweet soft orbs that have no idea/whether they're falling into this world or the next."

Finally, but by no means happily, as I'd love to point you to them all, I will single out "Afternoon" as my favorite, though "Art" ran a hell of a race and should be given more than a flimsy ribbon for its effort. The rhythm of this poem danced inside me as a read, truth in a beat thumping only in my head. I can't excerpt it, can't bring myself to, so you get it all.

"All we need/hovers before us/a dream of gold/wheat and sky/shimmering warm (but/what kind of pass/do you need to get/into a place like that?/we wonder, fumbling/in pockets and muttering sorry/as though the cashier waited/impatiently, popping/her gum).

All we need/is entrance into/serenity and if/we find it in a deserted/movie theater who/can blame us?

Need is/a lion waiting/by the front door,/a dun going/down to the other world,/Hold me, we say./We say, let me go./Need is not the leaf/carried miles on the/surface of the water./It is, of course/the water."

Truth is beauty and beauty, truth. You'll get both, here, and so much more, and be so glad you did. I could heap praise upon Castaway until the mountain ran over into the sea, but the best praise I can give it is that you should see it for yourself.

Truly Wonderful

What a terrific collection this is, full of sadness and hope and a generosity of spirit that brings language and people to life. What sticks with me is the gorgeous imagery of the Midwest, the vivid and bittersweet recollections of childhood, the gentle humor, the smart and perceptive observations of people and places, and the longing that colors it all. Reading these poems is like hearing secrets from a good friend--hers and your own. Highly, highly recommended.

Poetry Excellence

They say we have finished becoming by age seven. We are the tree in the front yard by then - drag queen spectacle at christmas pale fingered in the spring, dark green secrets in the summer - but never any different bark, leaves of another species, arms the shape of castle spires.

How to Follow the Rules
Sleep through mornings that show you one dull path, the one you think you've made for yourself and can't remake, the one you plod down like an old horse with blinders on who can smell the wide world out there but doesn't remember the jittery foal inside, the filly damn-fool-stupid who raced across tender spring grass just for the sake of the wind.

A clear, concise work - well worth the investment

Truly Irresistible designs.

I have made 3 items in less than a week since receiving this book. It is an amazing book with truly simple but gorgeous designs and some are just so quick to make you can complete a little jumper or jacket in an evening whilst you watch tv.

This book is exactly the same as Erika's-Knitting for two.

The only difference cover to cover is actually the cover and the title, otherwise all pictures and patterns are the same so I am not sure which came out first. But don'tbuy both thinking they are different! I particularly love some of the stunning little girls designs which I can'twait till there is a little girl around to knit them for. I made the stunning star pattern bonnet(It actually looks like a flower to me on the crown of the bonnet)and is absolutely stunning. I made it in a merino/silk blend. This books designs are all fantastic, she makes maternity wear, wearable! The babies projects are all completely do-able and will provide much pleasure for years to come.

Sweet little book

Darling patterns, there's several I want to make. I bought this book for the bonnet pattern, my daughter in law loves it! Very vintage looking. It's only written for a 6-9 month size, but by going down a needle size or two and using finer yarn, I made it for a newborn. It came out perfectly.

About the Author
A Yi is a Chinese author born in 1976. After spending five years as a police officer, he quit to become the editor-in-chief of the bi-monthly literary magazine Chutzpah. He has written two collections of short stories, Grey Stories and The Bird Saw Me, some of which have been published in Granta and The Guardian, and he was nominated for the People’s Literature Short Stories prestigious award for Top Twenty Literary Giants of the Future in 2010. A Perfect Crime was published in China in 2011. He lives in Beijing.

Anna Holmwood translates literature from Chinese and Swedish to English. She was awarded one of the first British Centre for Literary Translation mentorship awards in 2010 and has since translated two novels, countless short stories for publication and samples for agents and rights sellers. She is currently working on a major series of Chinese martial arts novels by Jin Yong for MacLehose Press. In 2011 she cofounded the Emerging Translators’ Network to support early career translators, and was elected to the UK Translators Association committee in 2012. She lives in China.

excellent and perceptive work

The book's flap correctly points out some similarities with Kafka, Camus, and Dostoeyvsky; readers of these authors will be able to recognize the similarities. The translation does seem to be a bit awkward in places, but I cannot be sure of this, since I cannot read the book in the original language. The story is tight, and puzzling in parts. And the author creates many interesting metaphors. The story expresses a deeply and astutely perceived philosophy. The end explains what you did not understand earlier . . . "and when all that will be left is dancing dust."

A Perfect Crime by A Yi delves into the troubled mind ...

A Perfect Crime by A Yi delves into the troubled mind of a psychopath attempting to find meaning in a society he considers dehumanizing. The story begins as he concludes his only course of action is to commit the perfect murder. The existential crisis presented is similar to Crime and Punishment, and the like, but darker. It is a genuinely creepy and disturbing book. Despite that creepiness, it is hard to put down.

The book occasionally suffers from being a translation from the original Chinese, but Yi’s voice still comes through. He writes about a world of where technology is a “whore” that lures us to believe that meaningfulness is defined by the time spent on the news cycle. His wry observations of the absurd recall Vonnegut.

The young protagonist kills his classmate. The murder has no apparent motive but when the story reaches its ending the reason for the killing becomes clear. The story begins with a crime and then a hunt by the police for the killer; the tension and suspense are not immense but sufficiently tight to captivate the reader. The end of the tale, which is the best part of the book, takes on a deep philosophical and sociological examination of life and death. The protagonist’s senseless and wanton killing of Kong Jie is intended to demonstrate the meaninglessness of life. He emphasises this point by the careless disregard for his own life. Kong Jie is dead, so what? He is going to be executed, so what? The ultimate point, is, what about the rest of us? What about life itself? In the context of the overall picture of the vast and timeless universe, what is life? What is life when even the most magnificent stars also burn themselves out? It is only a matter of time. That is also the same point Camus was making in his version of a similar theme in ‘The Stranger’.

This English translation conveys the story and meaning well but there are pockets in which the translator seemed to have taken the Chinese text literally rendering the translation a little awkward. For example, it is not clear whether the line 'She was probably out of battery or spending time with her friends' was spoken by the victim's mother or the killer. The phrase 'out of battery' might have been a reference to Kong Jie’s cell-phone but the sentence as produced is too colloquial (when the context does not suggest that it was a colloquial statement). At various other places, the use of the word 'they' is not clear who it was meant to refer to.

There is also a misspelling of 'my butt' as 'by butt'. "Ma paid her back a long [time] ago' had the word 'time' missing. These are faults of the editorial team rather than the author or translator and mar what would have been a perfectly enchanting book.

I'm a big fan of this author's series, The Club Girl Diaries. I strongly encourage you to read the first two books of that series, Harmony & Chelsea, before starting Blizzard. They are heavily intertwined and it would be difficult for you to get the full picture without that prior knowledge. I understand why they are being separated as each series is focused on either a male or female, however; the characters are in both and the sequence of events are better understood if read as they occur rather than by series order. Was that as clear as mud? Personally, I read them out of order, and I still enjoyed them. But I thought I'd give you a heads up, thinking that you'd rather experience the anticipation of the outcome rather than accidentally finding out details through another character's experiences. No matter what order you read them in, I'm sure you will love them all as I did. There's a very strong family vibe that you get from the Brothers of Blood MC and their women. Whether they be current, previous, or future club girls, they are all strong women that challenge the brothers while at the same time bringing something special to the club. As each one is highlighted as the series progresses, the deeper I fall. I've become very attached to these fictional characters. As I learn about their painful pasts and share in their introduction and acceptance into the MC family, I further appreciate the strong bond that the brothers have with each other and their women and children. I'm hoping that both series will continue to grow for a long time to come.

Blizzard is the club VP. He's also best friends with the president, Optimus. Though he is respectful of the authority, he still has a relaxed relationship with the president, and their witty banter is amusing. Especially since Optimus has already fallen for a club girl and therefore is on the receiving end of some harmless teasing among the men regarding who has the balls in their relationship. As you will learn from reading a previous book, Blizzard was deceived by Rose and therefore has some serious trust issues when that experience was added to his already overflowing pile of disappointment in the parental department. He's decided that his club brothers are the only ones he can depend on, and trust with his heart. He had decided to lock it up tight, but a certain little princess forced him to let her in. She was irresistible and he wasn't the only one she had wrapped around her little finger. I joined the party too.

Rose is devastated by her own behavior. She thought she was doing what was right, but she was wrong. Her choices cost her everything. All she'd ever wanted was a family to love and in search of that, she lost the one she didn't even realize she had. How can she expect them to forgive her when she can't even forgive herself? She's decided that in order to prove her heart is in the right place, she will sacrifice herself to help them. It's not like she is worried about getting hurt, she's already hurting. Maybe they will see that she truly cares and give her a second chance, especially him. He's the one she's missing the most. He's the one that visits her in her dreams, reminding her of what she walked away from.

Blizzard is exciting and suspenseful, while at the same time full of sorrow and sweetness. I was laughing one minute, and sighing the next. I worried and waited for the story to go where I wanted it to, and then ended up being taken where I least expected it to go. The author gave me a glimpse into some other situations and a peek at some possible relationships, just snickering as she reeled me in. Knowing that I would be intrigued and dying with anticipation as I waited for the next installment to answer all my questions. The line forms here...

Oh what can I say about Blizzard? Ruff around the edges, alpha male, hard headed but with a heart to love and protect what's his! I am crushing on Blizzard for sure! What a lucky lady Rose is! Really loved this book! 5*'s!

Read this book that in one sitting. I spent my entire day off with the Brothers and I loved every second and of it.
Such clever writing, every word fit perfectly. Every line made sense. The whole that ng just fit. I am truly going to miss this series.
