A Moderate Take on Clergy Ethics
By Ansen Plopbundle
Clergy Ethics in a Changing Society is a series of essays produced in 1991 about the professionalization of the office of the pastor and the ensuing ethical questions that follow. Probably the best way to review this is to write a one or two sentence summary about each essay. One agreed upon finding of all essayists is summed up in the introduction: “. . . the prospect for developing a single set of professional norms for clergy ethics, analogous to similar efforts in the professions of medicine, law, and--increasingly--business management, is to be greeted with a prudent degree of ambivalence” (20).

Martin Marty begins the first essay in the book focusing on changes in culture and society and how the office of the pastor has changed from an ecclesiastical understanding toward a more contractual, entrepreneurial understanding. Landon Gilkey argues that to understand clergy ethics one must first understand their church polity and ecclesiology. William F. May explores how the church can “bridge the gap” between an individualistic life of the person and the community’s they share. Rebecca S. Chopp attempts to add her thoughts coming from a liberationist perspective, arguing that the professional model has hurt churches and communities. James P. Wind looks at how the clergy are viewed from the outside - and discusses several examples of fiction and how they perceive the nature of the minister. Paul F. Camenisch looks at clergy ethics from the entrepreneurial or professional model. M. L. Brownsberger talks about the silence in pulpits of how to apply Christian ethics to the business world.

Dennis P. McCann questions whether there is a normative basis for clergy ethics in contemporary America. J. Russell Burck examines the relationship between ethics and pastoral care. Don S. Browning begins by noting three “families” - families in the church, the community of the church as family and the pastor’s family and argues that examining these three in detail may help solve some contemporary clergy problems. Ann O’Hara Graff writes from a Catholic woman’s perspective and looks at how women’s place in the church post-Vatican II affects these issues. Eleanor Scott Meyers comes at the issue from a sociological perspective and considers how various cultural issues affect the structure of the pulpit and the pastor’s preparation for ministry. Joseph A. Edelheit writes about this issue from a rabbi’s point of view and argues from “an ethics of interpretation” (251). He applies this interpretive ethics to two areas: The Jewish religious experience and AIDS. Finally, Robert Michael Franklin writes from an African American pastoral perspective and its relationship to politics.

I found this on a clearance aisle in a used bookstore and it was only one dollar. I picked it up because I was more interested in a particular writer than the subject itself. It’s not a bad read, but the book is nearly twenty-five years old, so the book isn’t nearly as relevant to this issue as when it was written. As a whole, it’s not quite my cup of tea but it’s a nice treatment on the subject.
