Robert E. Lee’s war correspondence is well known, and here and there personal letters have found their way into print, but the great majority of his most intimate messages have never been made public. These letters reveal a far more complex and contradictory man than the one who comes most readily to the imagination, for it is with his family and his friends that Lee is at his most candid, most engaging, and most vulnerable. Over the past several years historian Elizabeth Brown Pryor has uncovered a rich trove of unpublished Lee materials that had been held in both private and public collections.

Her new book, a unique blend of analysis, narrative, and historiography, presents dozens of these letters in their entirety, most by Lee but a few by family members. Each letter becomes a departure point for an essay that shows what the letter uniquely reveals about Lee’s time or character. The material covers all aspects of Lee’s life—his early years, West Point, his work as an engineer, his relationships with his children and his slaves, his decision to join the South, his thoughts on military strategy, and his disappointments after defeat in the Civil War. Robert E. Lee remains one of the most revered figures in U.S. history. For southerners he remains the personifiation of the Lost Cause, a military genius and courtly aristocrat whose nobility of spirit was worthy of the intense devotion he elicited from his men and admirers. Even Americans who despised the cause for which Lee fought express admiration for his military acumen, compassion, and kindness. But both in his personal and public life, Lee was more complicated than the iconic image suggests. Historian Pryor uses a compilation of Lee's private correspondence, adding her own commentaries, to present a more balanced but scrupulously fair portrait. There are surprises here. As commandant at West Point, Lee was far from beloved by cadets, who resented his authoritarian ways. Although Lee had his doubts about the utility of slavery as an institution, his views on race relations were hardly enlightened Still, his letters and Pryor's analysis reinforce our appreciation of Lee's best qualities, including his personal warmth, devotion to friends and family, and sense of fairness. About the Author
Elizabeth Brown Pryor has combined careers as an award-winning historian and senior diplomat in the American Foreign Service, most recently as a senior adviser to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe of the U.S. Congress. Her 1987 biography of Clara Barton is considered the authoritative work on the subject.

Revolutionary and vital. Absolutely indispensable.

I have been a park ranger at Arlington House, The Robert E. Memorial for 17 years now and I can honestly say that I have read at least five biographies, assessments, evaluations or interpretations of Robert E. Lee for each of those years. I am certain that when all the books and articles are added together they number close to a hundred. It's important that I do that. It's my job and my responsibility to have as comprehensive an understanding of Robert E. Lee's life as is possible so that I can honestly and accurately convey it to the people who visit and the students who partake in our education programs. But with all of these books and articles there is a certain consistency, not with interpretation but with information. It is safe to say that since Douglas Southall Freeman wrote his landmark, Pulitzer Prize winning four volume biography in the 1930's the assumption has been that there is nothing new that can be found out about Lee. Freeman's work was so exhaustive, seemingly leaving no stone or document unturned, that, it seems, every biographer of Lee since then has taken the approach that no new research was needed or possible. Instead, it became the fashion for biographers and other historians to simply take what Freeman researched and interpret it in whatever way they wanted. Thomas Connelly chose to psychoanalyze Lee in a groundbreaking and exceptionally flawed work, The Marble Man while Alan Nolan chose a lawyerly approach, constructing the case against Robert E. Lee in his book, Lee Considered, as if Lee had never been considered before. And there have been others, many quite reverential but the problem with all of them is that they've all used the same information. Writing about Lee ceased being about scholarship and instead became bickering op ed pieces. And the greatest crime of it has been that it has made Robert E. Lee uninteresting. How many times can you read the same things, no matter what way they've been spun, and still remain excited? I stopped being interested in reading things about Lee over five years ago. I have forced myself to keep reading but there has been no joy in it.

Until now. Elizabeth Brown Pryor and her extraordinary new book, Reading The Man, has single-handedly revived what was hitherto unrevivable. She has made Robert E. Lee come to life in a way that no other writer has ever been able to do and she has done it in a way that should make every other biographer of Lee blush: she has let the man speak for himself and she has done it through new research. Yes, new research. Certainly much of the new material she has uncovered has been locked away in trunks for almost a century so other researchers including Freeman had no access to it. But some of what she's used has been available to researchers for decades they just chose not to look. Intellectual laziness? Or have researchers just been content with what they've had? Fortunately, Elizabeth Pryor was neither lazy nor content and what she has constructed is a masterpiece of biographical examination. The Lee that springs from her pages is dynamic and emotional, conflicted and complex, playful and loving and nothing like he has ever been portrayed before. But the magic of this work, what truly elevates it beyond mere interpretation into what can only be described as revolutionary, is how Ms. Pryor manages to be both critical and sympathetic with her subject. With Lee it has always been you either revere or revile him. There has been no middle ground. Those that simplified him to the point of mere symbolism insured that. He was either the Christ like martyr of the Lost Cause or the white supremacist Benedict Arnold of the Civil War. But Elizabeth Pryor has shown us, has proven beyond reproach, that you can be critical of someone and still like him. You can point out his flaws but empathize with his humanity. You can be honest without defilement. What Ms. Pryor has done for all of us interested in history, the Civil War and Robert E. Lee is incalculable. She has, quite literally, shown us a new way to examine our common history and truly learn from it. We would be fools not to follow her.

Robert Lee -- He's Human After All (and Still a Legend)

Having read a couple of reviews in the "main stream" print media that appeared to celebrate this book's exposure of Robert E. Lee's true sentiments about slavery (e.g., the Philadelphia Inquirer's review focused ad nauseum on the most negative report of Lee's ordered whipping of a captured runaway slave), I relunctantly bought this book (from Amazon, of course), fearful that this would prove to be yet another exercise in political correction by a less-than-objective historian.

Reading it, however, revealed something altogether different -- Lee was a man of his times (high society in the antbellum south, 19th Century) and also a real and very moral man, who focused more on the practical than the theoretical.

That is not to say that the author, Elizabeth Pryor Brown, sought to try prove that Robert E. Lee wasn't the icon that he is held to be, even to this day, in many parts and in many hearts of the South. She dramatized the presence of a whipping post for errant slaves, with little proof that it was ever used. But as is often the case with historians who delve deeply into their subjects, her heart was touched the humanity, grace and character of Lee, through a thorough and scintillating read of private letters that had been locked away in a bank vault for more than a century.

Things I learned in the book: He was a mega-flirt, but never unfaithful to or threatened by his strong-willed, secure and relatively independent wife. He loved the company of others, particularly his fellow soldiers and officers. None of three daughters ever married. He was confident yet humble,loved his family, and had a tireless devotion to duty, both an an engineer and a soldier.

He, not unlike almost anyone who has ever served in the military, expressed his share of frustrations with the military life, and even showed a little jealousy when peers were promoted ahead of him (but also showing that he was not particularly adept at, or fond of, politics). Except, possibly, for his flirtations, apparently done with the full knowledge of Mary Lee, none of this would be a surprise to any devotee or student of the General.

This book is very well written; it is fair and balanced, and gives more time and attention to Lee, the man, than Lee the general or even the soldier. The book was a joy to read and very hard to put down, even for a historical tome, with difficult to understand reprints of entire letters by Lee and members of his family and a bit too much ink on Harry "Light Horse" Lee, Robert's heroic but badly flawed and largely absent father. Her final chapter, and its final words, are wonderfully insightful at answering an important question -- why, after all these years, are we stil fascinated by this lengdary man? This book is a wonderful achievement and a worthy read.

No minds will likely be changed about Lee, whether you're a son of the South or South-hating liberal yankee who will be disappointed that Lee isn't thorough demystified. The careful and thoughtful reader will come away with greater appreciation and respect for the man.

A good look at the life of Robert E. Lee

For those who wish to have a good look at the life of Robert E. Lee in one volume, this is the book to use as a basic biography and guide. Author Elizabeth Brown Pryor has taken letters written by Lee as the springboard for each of the chapters of the book, corresponding with the chapters in his life. This gives the reader a chance to read and sense the tone of the celebrated General, in his own words. Surely, this was not an easy task since there are about 10,000 known letters of Robert E. Lee scattered hither and yon. To find, read and cull the best of these must have been both Herculean and painstaking. One suspects it has also been a labor of love.

Those with the sketchiest knowledge of Lee will remember that his father was a Revolutionary War era hero, that he had an almost unparalleled record as a West Point cadet, that he married into the Custis and therefore Washington family, making him not only one of the First Families of Virginia but also of the First Family of America. Of course best known is Lee's choice to side with state and kindred during the Civil War and the resultant verve and disappointment on the field of battle.

In this 200th birthday anniversary year, Pryor fleshes out these facts with a nuanced portrait of a complex man whose personal and professional life are not as easily summarized as one might suppose. Dealing with those who came before her who served as Lee's uncritical biographers, Pryor demythologizes Lee in a respectful way, allowing him to be not only three dimensional but also multifaceted. She also gives an outstanding pr�cis of aspects of the Lee hagiography and misconceptions that have persisted through repetition. It would be correct to call Pryor's approach even-handed. She clearly appreciates that Lee was a towering figure in his time; she also allows the reader to see his eccentricities.

The book is excellent on some challenging subjects such as Lee's attitude toward slavery and how it compares to the attitudes of his contemporaries. Pryor also gives us an account of Lee's unabashed affection for women. The chapter on Lee's tenure as head of West Point speaks volumes about how Lee was perceived by those who observed him as a professional soldier preparing others to be professional soldiers.

The author's description of what went right and what went wrong at some of the key battles of the war, notably Gettysburg, are well done, and will provide both the general reader and the Civil War expert good starting points for conversation. Even so, I must confess that the second part of the book was for me slower-going than the first half. Whether that is due to Lee, Pryor or me, I am not sure. Nor am I sure what to conclude about Robert E. Lee--a man of honor (rightly placed or mis-placed), of brilliance (and obstinacy) in peace and in war, and a man who took a road less traveled by which made all the difference.

The book has many fine illustrations scattered throughout the text, including many portraits and photographs of Lee from youth to old age.

Elizabeth Brown Pryor has previously given us a similar life of Clara Barton. Pryor is both an award-winning historian and senior diplomat in the American Foreign Service, having served as a senior adviser to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe of the U.S. Congress.

There's not much that's useful in this chapter. I feel bad even calling it a 'chapter,' to be honest. If this were a meal, this section wouldn't even be an appetizer. It would be like maybe some bread that's been sitting in the back that they bring out to everyone. But not really good bread with olive oil and stuff--just like hard, stale bread that you take one bite out of and then set down and then maybe give another chance later in the meal to soak up the sauce from your linguine because you think maybe you were too harsh on the bread earlier, but you realize it's even worse than you thought because you were really hungry when you sat down and it�still�tasted really shitty.

I guess I'm saying I'd probably just skip it if I were you.

Looking to step your fantasy game up? JBales' insight and statistical analysis regarding fantasy sports in unrivaled. He is also humorous with his quips, which makes for easy reading. In this rendition of his fantasy sports analysis, he walks one through the myriad of ff players' concerns, what stats to be on the look out for, and how to gain an edge in your own analysis. If you do play any degree of fantasy sports, this book should definitely be a part of your library.

Can't wait to increase profits!

If I had to choose my favorite fantasy sports author it would no doubt be Jonathan Bales. Everything he puts out is great and this book is no exception. I love that he always relies on statistics as the foundation for his research so you know that the methods he recommends are successful.

My favorite part in the book is learning about how the vegas lines impact each fantasy position and learning the win probabilities for certain player correlations i.e. how often do fantasy teams with a paired QB and RB have success etc. Keep up the great work.

The insight in this book is hard to find even in the avalanche of info in the DFS world today. If your looking for that couple extra points to pass the others by in your contests this is the book to show you how. A must read!

Toes in the Sand - A real testament of Faith

Toes in the Sand is a true testament of how one woman gave it all to God and took the leap of faith to make her dreams come true. Nena clearly illustrates on a real level throughout Toes in the Sand that we can all be happy by putting our faith in God and letting Him give us signs along the way on how to obtain our dreams. If you are in a place in your life where you are facing a small change, a big change or you are just looking for a change - read this book. You will be encouraged and inspired. Nena tells her story on such a personal level that you feel like you have known her your whole life. I could relate to Nena. She shares with us her journey of loss of a loved one, loss of jobs, kids leaving for college and the decision that changed her life and brought her more happiness than she ever imagined. If you have ever doubted your faith - you will learn from reading Toes in the Sand that faith is truly unwavering.

The teacher appears, when the student is ready

Toes in the Sand is a great personal story which I truly enjoyed. Nena's story has many lessons in it, and is an honest accounting of her own. I appreciated her candid introspection of how she had been successful in her career, had a great family, and had a relationship with God; it was when she came to a point in her life when she consciously chose to take God up on a standing offer to give Him MORE control of her life, that she became more fulfilled and was successful on a whole new level. This was an uplifting, powerful story. I felt much better having read it, and started to look for more ways where I could surrender my own control and ask God to help navigate my life more. I'd encourage anyone who is looking for a deeper relationship with God to read this book and learn how Nena did it. Great book!

Nena takes you on her journey over many months of challenges until she arrives in a place she had always dreamed of living. How she makes it to her dream will have you reading on and on and then celebrating with her.She makes us feel like we are there with her facing these challenges alongside of her and admiring her coping skills by staying positive. In the end, these feelings prove to be beneficial as they bring her and her family to a place where they want to be.
This is the book to read this year and recommend to others as it illustrates how to endure when faced with challenges. Her book will inspire you to live your dreams and have unwavering faith.

More than I expected

I got a copy of this thinking it would look cool on my coffee table and honestly, it's more than just a pretty cover. It's hysterical! Kinda reminds me of the Worst Case Scenario books -- when they first came out, before they were overdone. The techniques, seriously, really do work for a quick, legal, mid-day energy boost (some of them higher than others). I work from home and have found myself trying a few of these "tricks" to get a little inspiration and creativity. It's like I'm tapping into some kind of weird energy. The website is a great design ([...]) with audio and video highs and I'm downloading the iPhone app. Great for writers, creatives, non-religious spiritualists, yoga fans or 20-something guys who like to snicker at the cover. Oh, and it does look really cool on my coffee table.

Tapping Into Our Senses

James Nestor has compiled over 175 ways to get high, without the expense, legal ramifications and/or risk to your health that comes from the doing the other stuff. Ironically, alcohol & tobacco are the most dangerous drugs known to man, yet they're legal. Add a little processed sugar to the mix and you'll be dead before you know it; at least you avoided criminal prosecution.

Seriously, this is quite an engaging resource for tapping into our senses, to produce natural highs; and they really work. I just tried the "hypnagogic induction" and I inadvertently created the most incredible lucid dream I've ever had; filled with amazingly detailed designs that would make Peter Max proud. The good news is, it's completely safe and cost-free during these tough economic times. No wonder this thing's selling like crazy.

Not all of Nestor's suggestions are for everyone, of course. Personally, I can't imagine eating or smoking ants to get a buzz, or looking for that dopamine high if I happen to get repeatedly stung by bees. Thanks, but no thanks.

However, this book comes highly recommended for anyone trying to get the most out of their natural states. The brain really is a marvelous device and it functions best when no outside chemicals are introduced into the mix; hear that, kids?

Nestor has unlocked the keys to our imagination; but this "Twilight Zone" won't freak you out.

I want to get high, so high....

I bought this book because, like all humans, I like to get high once
in a while. To my surprise and delight, most of the book is devoted to
the story behind the high, rather than actual instructions on
achieving the specific high. While you can definitely use the step by
step methods to get high (without drugs), and I have, I found it more
interesting as a straight read-through on the history and factoids
behind each high.

Probably the first altered state of consciousness I ever became aware
of was spinning on a merry go round as a little kid and, like most
people, I've discovered and enjoyed other highs throughout my life. As
a world traveler, it's not hard to notice that different cultures all
over the globe have distinct methods for achieving altered states.
It's a universal impulse for mankind and one that's as natural as any
of our other desires. This book researches dozens and dozens of
"highs" from all over the world, and presents them in accessible,
often hilariously written little nuggets. Most include scientific
explanations, which I thought pretty fascinating. It's a fun trip
either which way.

WHY DID I WRITE THIS BOOK?

In the summer of 2012, I was an unemployed grad-school dropout and relatively new to yoga. I enjoyed going to classes, but like many other yoga students who look “different,” I always left the studio feeling a vague sense of discrimination at the hands of my teachers and fellow students. I was also strapped for cash and could barely afford the occasional drop-in class. So I turned my focus to developing a home practice. I began photographing and documenting my yoga asana practice and posting the shots on Instagram. At the time, Instagram was a fairly new kind of social media, but there was already a small community of yoga teachers and practitioners who were using the app to share their home practices. I quickly found my place in this virtual community and with it, a sense of inclusion and encouragement that I’d never felt in any live yoga class.

That’s when everything changed. I became ravenous for information beyond the physical poses I’d encountered in studio classes. I studied anatomy, the history of yoga, and the evolution of various yoga lineages. I got certified as a yoga instructor. Today, I have the incredible privilege to travel the world teaching the practice I love so much.�

As much as social media has given me, it shouldn’t be the only source of inspiration for people who don’t fit the typical yoga mold. That’s why I wrote this book. Because all yoga bodies deserve to be represented in print, not just those that are slender, female, and white. I wrote this book for every fat person, every old person, and every exceptionally short person.

I wrote it for every person who has called themselves ugly and every person who can’t accept their beauty. I wrote it for every person who is self-conscious about their body.

I wrote it for every human being who struggles to find happiness on a daily basis, and for anyone who has ever felt overwhelmed by the mere act of being alive. I’ve been there. We all have.

Yoga is for everybody and EVERY BODY. You don’t have to be thin and you don’t have to be fat. You don’t have to be a specific color or commit to a specific diet. You don’t have to earn (or have access to) a certain amount of money. You don’t have to embody anything other than your truest and most honest self in order to practice yoga. You don’t have to omit the sadness, the anger, and all of the other “ugly” emotions that flavor our lives.

You don’t have to be anyone other than yourself.

And I think it’s high time that someone shouted it loud enough so everyone can hear.

This is a great book for beginner yogis anxious about starting out and for teachers wanting to be more inclusive in their instruction. Jessamyn Stanley contributes to the development of modern yoga by discussing issues related to size, race, class, and other identities -- conversations that are missing at mainstream studios -- in a light and accessible way. She encourages everyone to be themselves on the mat and stick to yoga no matter what telling us that the miracle of serenity will happen if we commit. Highly recommended!

She does a great job of creating a suspenseful story-line and a nice ...

I've been a fan for Ally Carter's books for a long time. She does a great job of creating a suspenseful story-line and a nice mix of ensemble characters. More so than her previous series, in the Embassy Row series, I had a harder time relating to Grace. In the first book, specifically, Grace was a troubled girl, and not a particularly fun character to read about. I understood and appreciated that her narrative was written in a gritty, emotional way (going along with what her character had been through), but I missed her character development. In the second book, I again felt like Grace as a character was overshadowed by some of the action of the plot. I'm happy to say, though, that in Take the Key and Lock Her Up, we finally see a Grace that can be happy and not let her grief weigh her down.

That being said, this book was my favorite out of the series and the strongest by far!

Pros: The pace of the book was quite nice, and the subplots all flowed together and were tied up nicely. I liked how certain tidbits of information from previous books (even just a sentence or two) came back to have a large part in this book. Grace and her friends grew up in this novel, and it was nice to see how the characters supported one another.
Alexei was also a great plus of this book! The romance was nicely scattered throughout the book, and thankfully there wasn't too much angst between Grace and Alexei keeping them apart.

Cons: I would have liked to know more about the Society, for its motives were not fleshed out fully. I honestly forgot about it in the scenes it wasn't mentioned, and I just wasn't sure what to think of it even at the end of the book.
I wished Grace's other family would have been involved more, including her grandpa, Jamie, and Grace's dad. I really enjoyed Jamie as a character and understood he was injured for most of the book, but it seemed like he should have been more involved. It bothered me that Grace's dad was nowhere to be found-- you're telling me that his kids are being hunted by political leaders and he doesn't step in and try and protect him? And he's high up in the army but doesn't know anything? I get it if he wasn't informed, but seeing that a lot of the adults involved didn't tell him either was strange.

Overall, this was the strongest book in the Embassy Row series and it was a nice wrap up of all the mysteries surrounding Grace and her friends!

Take the Key and Lock Her Up (2016) is the third installment in Ally Carter’s Embassy Row series, following All Fall Down and See How They Run. Once more, we plunge into the disturbed mind of teenage Grace Blakely in this fast-paced, nonstop international action/thriller for young adults.

Grace and her brother, Jamie, have just learned a centuries-old secret about their true heritage, which threatens the royal family of Adria, the secret women’s Society their mother once belonged to, and possibly the peace in Europe. With Grace’s Russian love interest, the stoic Alexei, the youths and their protector are on the run for their lives. Jamie has been seriously injured, and Grace fears the worst for her brother if he doesn’t seek medical help. Desperate to keep him alive, Grace throws herself to the wolves, only to be met with an impossible compromise.

This whole Embassy Row series really is excellent, and the third and final book pulled out all the stops. Everything major connected nicely in the grand finale, which was truly a nail-biter. I liked the whole ‘nursery rhyme’ theme running through the series and how the rhyme held centuries-old answers. I also enjoyed that these books have a cast of characters full of brave, bright and powerful women. Take the Key and Lock Her Up has everything from our hard-edged, not-your-ordinary narrator, action, international intrigue and a dash of romance, to high-stakes danger, fictional but fun history, and royal secrets. If you like the idea of an action series for teens with a darker twist on The Selection, mixed with the history of Anastasia Romanov, then these are the books for you! Five stars to a trilogy well-done. I’d love to read more on Embassy Row.

Great conclusion to another lovely Ally Carter series. While Embassy Row wasn't my favorite (it's so hard to beat Heist Society and Gallagher Girls), I did love this book most of the 3 in the series. Grace finally feels like the heroine to me, and is less unsure, consequences be damned.

About the Author
Roberto Carfagni is a well-known teacher of Latin by the nature method, developed by Hans �rberg, and has acquired a long experience in the spoken use and teaching of the language. He taught Latin literature in the Academy "Vivarium novum" (Rome) for four years, and has studied the pedagogical ideals of Italian Humanism. He is the author of the "Epitome historiae sacrae" and has recently founded the "Schola Latina" (www.scholalatina.org).

Very useful supplement

This is an exceptionally helpful supplement to Lingua Latina.

I was given a copy for evaluation, and here's what sets it apart:
- Layout similar to the actual text
- Helpful images used in the exercises
- Exercises that go beyond those given in the text: you'll be asked to construct sentences and use vocabulary in ways that either give extra practice for the exercises in the book, or often - and this is the key part - use words and phrases in new ways that the book exercises don't get to.

All in all, a very helpful workbook. No cons to think of - the one reviewer is correct to note that there is no answer key, which would be a helpful addition, but I found the author to be quite friendly by email, and I'm sure that the publisher would be of assistance for any specific questions.

Great resource but it needs an answer key.

It is exactly what we needed to reinforce the lessons from Familia Romana. I only complaint is that it does not have an answer key.

Excellent addition to an exceptional series

This is an excellent text! The exercises are masterfully written to help the student think about the grammar, syntax and vocabulary from each chapter setting without being tedious or requiring the use of an intermediary language. Carfangi created an excellent addition to the Lingua Latina per se Illustrata series, which rivals even the work by the creator of the series, Hans Oerberg. I hope the series continues to grow.
