About the Author
Hal Draper is the author of the five-volume study of Karl Marx's Theory of Revolution copublished with Monthly Review Press. A socialist journalist and author for many years, Mr. Draper has published articles in such journals as Etudes de Marxologie, New Politics, and Le Contrat Social. He was the editor of the Independent Socialist journal Labor Action from 1948 to 1958. Other books available from the Center for Socialist History include Socialism from Below, Berkeley: The New Student Revolt. Mr. Draper also wrote a verse translation of the works of Heine published by Suhrkamp/Insel

Fascinating journey through (mis)translations

The ever interesting Hal Draper gives us here an excavation of the Communist Manifesto. It starts with a thorough history of the commission, writing and publishing of this hugely influential work and then gives four parallel translations of the document itself: in the original German, the first English translation, the familiar authorised English version and a new English translation. This is followed by exhaustive paragraph by paragraph notes. All of which may seem a dry as dust exercise in historical hair-splitting but turns out to be a fascinating account of the old Chinese whispers phenomenon.
There is, as far as I have yet seen, no huge reversal of meaning. The vast number of readers, whether for or against, have got the basic gist of it all. But the nuances are nevertheless important. Two examples will suffice: the (in)famous "idiocy of rural life" which has no doubt given urban dwellers a thrill of aggressive superiority over the decades actually had an original meaning closer to "apartness" or "isolation" of rural life. And the "numberless indefeasible chartered freedoms" that came under attack from the installation of "free trade" were freedoms that could be more accurately described as "dearly won" - a phrase that is more poignant and especially relevant in our own time.
All of which makes the occasional typo ironic. The aforementioned "idiocy of rural life" becomes the "privatised isolation of rural lide". Oh well. Maybe somebody someday will get it right?
