Mark Juergensmeyer is Professor of Sociology and Global Studies and Founding Director and Fellow of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.Dinah Griego is Project Coordinator of the Luce Project on the Role of Religion in Global Civil Society at the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.John Soboslai is a PhD candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

A SCHOLARLY EXAMINATION OF THE RADHASOAMI MOVEMENT

Mark Juergensmeyer is Professor of Sociology and Director of Global and International Studies at UC, Santa Barbara. He has written other books such as Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence, Gandhi's Way: A Handbook of Conflict Resolution, Global Religions: An Introduction, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1991 book, "Why has the Radhasoami faith prospered? The question is not easy to answer, for the Radhasoami tradition is a peculiar blend of opposites. On the one hand, its leadership is efficient, progressive, and international; on the other hand, its beliefs and spiritual practices are arcane and esoteric, reviving a certain form of spirituality that reaches back to medieval Hinduism and perhaps beyond. In this book I intend to explore how this apparent contradiction is overcome, and how the juxtaposition of progressive and traditional modes of thought has enabled this new tradition to flourish in the modern age." (Pg. 4)

He explains, "By speaking of Radhasoami faith as a modern form of Hinduism, I am speaking of Hinduism in the loosest sense, as India's religious heritage... In the Punjab, the Radhasoami community is often regarded as an offshoot of Sikhism. This description is largely incorrect, but the Radhasoami tradition does have some connections with the Sikhs. The teachings of the first Radhasoami master were based, in part, on those of Guru Nanak, the Sikhs' founding master." (Pg. 6-7)

He notes, "All branches of the Radhasoami movement remember the Swami [Shiv Dayal] as having designated a successor, but they disagree about who it was. It is impossible to resolve this dispute, for the historical circumstances are scanty and imprecise. The Swami's reputed 'last utterances'---recorded by his brother and accepted in all branches of the movement as authentic---were not published until twenty-four years after his death. Moreover, they do not place any one person clearly in charge, nor do they imply that Swami Shiv Dayal conceived himself as occupying an office for which a successor was needed." (Pg. 35)

He points out, "The word Radhasoami literally refers to Krishna as lord (swami) of his consort, Radha." (Pg. 41) He adds, "IN Radhasoami the master is 'God-man.' As the intermediary between the highest planes of divine consciousness and our own worldly level, he can be viewed both as a manifestation of God and as a human being endowed with divine powers." (Pg. 67) He continues, "This is the central paradox of Radhasoami theology---that the Divine can be present in human form." (Pg. 69) He says, "Surat shabd yoga ... is the discipline (yoga) or way (marga) that unites the spirit (surat) with the spiritual sound (shabd)." (Pg. 90)

He observes, "Perhaps no branch of the Radhasoami family tree has been so well organized, so driven by grand visions of the future, and so subject to organizational disputes, as the Ruhani Satsang, established by Kirpal Singh in 1948. One reason for this is that several masters have succeeded Kirpal Singh, and each has established an ashram of his own. Another reason is the movement's international following, which has produced a number of semi-independent centers abroad. A third reason has to do with the personality of Kirpal Singh himself. He was a charismatic and visionary leader whose ideas energized his followers and sometimes led them into conflicting paths in their attempts to imitate him. From the very beginning his was a community on the move." (Pg. 172) He notes, "on August 21, 1974, he died, and his organization began to unravel... the movement had grown so rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s that it did not have time to develop the stable infrastructure that would allow the community to maintain itself beyond the death of its leading figure. Kirpal Singh had followed his own master... in linking the first phrase in Guru Nanak's morning prayer, 'eckankar,' to the highest level of spiritual consciousness. Twitchell followed suit and made it the name of his movement. The teachings of the Divine Light Mission, led by the boy guru Maharaj-ji, are essentially those of Radhasoami as well..." (Pg. 206-207)

you have to be a practitioner

There is so much garbage and misunderstanding when intellectuals write something about an spiritual movement. You have to be a practitioner in order to understand fully what Radhasoami is all about. It was a trick/ploy employed by a would be Saviour but it had nothing to do with Bhagwan Krishna and His favorite Radha. Radha in Radhasoami corresponds to the soul of the disciple/initiate. Soami corresponds to the Satguru. Like the Ramasita movement of Ramananda, the teacher of Kabir Sahib, it has nothing to do with Rama and Sita; Rama corresponds to the Guru and Sita corresponds to the soul of the disciple/initiate. It is much easier to understand if one knows the 'Mother and Child Luminosity' of Tibetan Buddhism. I hope that I did not insulted anyone.

This book is a winner for a cooking novice to a genuine foodie!

Toss the Ramen Noodles and Indulge!

I actually bought this book as a gift for a friend who was both getting married AND going to graduate school all in the same year. I put it together with a gift basket...She has no cooking experience.

And she said it has been one of her most used gifts!

That said, upon leafing through her own copy, I bought a second book...for myself...in spite of the fact that I love to cook and have been doing so for MANY years. The recipes are quick, delicious, imaginative, and (a great thing in this economy) inexpensive too!

It's a very thorough book even for someone who only wants to own ONE cookbook. Ever.
There are loads of recipes and varied tastes within...from fish, to beef, to chicken, even vegetarian and vegan recipes are included...even for those who aren't vegetarians those recipes are GOOD hearty ones that cross-over well to carnivores. It just has a huge variety of bites.

The recipes are diverse. Lots of good hearty American fare, but intermingled with Chinese, Indian, and Italian recipes. Also, there's everything from appetizers to breakfasts to salads to sandwiches to main dishes and desserts.

I found the ingredients to be ones that could easily be found and the recipes to be simple enough for the beginner cook...and fast for those on the go who still like good food.

there are even some great recipes to help throughout life...such as how to make croutons!

We've enjoyed the huevos rancheros. blueberry coffee cake, breakfast burritos and orange french toast for breakfast.

You can't lose with the fettucine alfredo, chicken and mushrooms, chicken fiesta salad, honey dijon salmon, lasagna, mexican lasagna, slow cooked barbecue chicken, chicken soup (lots of good soups and stews And soy meats are easy substitutes here if you wish!

and the chocolate souffle and apple cobbler are great endings!

While it is great for a college student learning to cook and short on time and money, I think any cook who loves good food can benefit. Lots of healthy dishes and hearty meals for anyone..

and for those who want the basics, there is even help knowing what basic kitchen tools are.

Very good for single people

As someone that is single and knows my way around the kitchen pretty well, I found this cookbook to be very useful for single people. A lot of recipes/cookbooks out there are geared towards families. It's hard to find recipes that are single serve. Some of my favorite recipes included steamed cabbage, simple green beans, beef stir fry.

... and this book caught my eye in the supermarket because i have a granddaughter in her 1st year of college. she shares a condo near campus with 3 other roommates and this will probably become their 'kitchen bible'. i don't want to give the book away now that i'm reading it, and will have to get a copy for myself. [that's why i'm here on amazon.] after 50+ years of cooking, i want QUICK and EASY as well as healthy. i flag almost every page i open the book to because of a recipe i want to try. who would have thought of spaghetti squash with butter and CINNAMON? (pg 236)

A masterpiece for learning pharmacology

This book is a superb piece of work from a teaching and a learning point of view. The author has put aside the traditional way of teaching a raw discipline, custommarily full of information difficult to retain. The subject is taken into a new dimmension, dividing by different clinical applications each one with a previous pathology, physiopathology, clinical characteristic and the pharmacological management required for each case. For example, respiratory emergencies are extensively reviewed, its different physiopathologies are described, the clinical characteristics common to each one, and the pharmacological treatment recommended in the prehospital setting. Every chapter is written the same way, thus providing the reader with a unique opportunity to blend over in a whole view the physiopatology, the clinical aspect and the pharmacological management in the field of an illness. I have no doubt this book contributes greatly to make young paramedics competent clinicians, and allow senior paramedics to hold their titles as Masters of Clinics.

About the Author

Audrey Heining-Boynton received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University and her MA from The Ohio State University.� Her career spans K-12 through graduate school teaching, most recently as Professor of Education and Spanish at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has won many teaching awards, including the prestigious ACTFL Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) Teacher of the Year Award, and The UNC ACCESS Award for Excellence in Working with LD and ADHD students. Dr. Heining-Boynton is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences, has published more than one hundred articles, curricula, textbooks, and manuals, and has won nearly $4 million in grants to help create language programs in North and South Carolina. Dr. Heining-Boynton has also held many important positions: President of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), President of the National Network for Early Language Learning, Vice President of Michigan Foreign Language Association, board member of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina, committee chair for Foreign Language in the Elementary School for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and elected Executive Council member of ACTFL.� She is also an appointed two-term Foreign Language Annals Editorial Board member and guest editor of the publication.

Glynis Cowell�is the Director of the Spanish Language Program in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and an Assistant Dean in the Academic Advising Program,College of Arts and Sciences, at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught first-year seminars, honors courses, and numerous face-to-face and hybrid Spanish language courses.� She also team-teaches a graduate course on the theories and techniques of teaching foreign languages. Dr. Cowell received her M.A. in Spanish Literature and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a concentration in Foreign Language Education, from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the faculty at UNC-CH in August 1994, she coordinated the Spanish Language Program in the Department of Romance Studies at Duke University. She has also taught Spanish at both the high school and community college level. At UNC-CH she has received the Students’ Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching as well as the Graduate Student Mentor Award for the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.

Dr. Cowell has directed teacher workshops on Spanish language and cultures and has presented papers and written articles on the teaching of language and literature, the transition to blended and online courses in language teaching, and teaching across the curriculum. She is the co-author of two other college textbooks.

Good enough for me

This is the basic Spanish textbook that I used for my Intro to Spanish class at my college. I saw students pay over $100 for this textbook (Spanish 1 and 2)and workbook at my school. Since my professor only covers five chapters for intro to Spanish, I thought this book would do the trick. It did. In fact, I payed here on Amazon $15 dollars to get Volume 1 of the book and saved over a hundred dollars. It serves its purpose and I could not be happier.

I won't go into what it contains but I will mention few things that are in there. You got greetings, conjugations, vocab, descriptions of oneself and what you like to do, it has glossary, few exercises, lots of pictures for visual reference, and in general, things like that. If you get the student manual, it has A LOT of things that you can fill in and practice. It does not come with this book but my professor required it so we can practice. That also cost me less than 20 dollars here on Amazon.

It did not have the Spanish lab code and was expensive as it is. I should have bought volume 1 and 2 with the code.

Not for self study

This book is more of a group activity guide for a classroom of people learning spanish. For what it is, I guess it is good, but I am studying spanish alone for an online class. I wanted it as a quick reference to have in front of me, but it is not set up like that. I end up using the internet (google) instead of looking things up in the book. If you are not assigned this book for a class I would stay away.
